We burned our pen yesterday. Will Ohman sucks. Zambrano has not gone deep in his first three outtings. Bottom line, we need a new pitcher in the pen for today's game. Why haven't the Cubs made some sort of move?

Somebody brought up a good point-since Ohman would have to go on revocable waivers, I don't think another pitcher could join the roster until he passed through those waivers. Therefore, there's nothing that can be done with Ohman. The other two candidates for being sent down are Cotts and Wuertz, and they are pitching too well to be sent down for 10 days. The Cubs will be fine if they are careful tonight or tomorrow. Erye can go an inning or two. Ohman can go. Everyone else could possibly go 1 tonight, although anybody who does is definitely unavailable tomorrow. If the Cubs can get 6 out of Z, they should be fine-especially with Hill going tomorrow.

The cubs are never fine when Ohman can go. Especially the way Lou has been using him.

Well, I meant more that nobody is hopefully going to blow out their arms from overuse tonight. Hopefully Ohman can just be used as a LOOGY tonight, although I bet he'll have to go an inning. It all depends if Carlos goes 5, 6, 7, or 8.

They could send Cedeno to AAA, or Theriot for that matter. They went from 12 to 11 pitchers when Guzman went down. If they wanted relief, they could get it, in theory.

However, the question is who is worth bringing up. Cherry just pitched yesterday, and is no fresher than the other guys (and his spring numbers don't really mean anything).

Guzman can't come up yet. As far as I know, Marshall, Novoa, Mateo, Prior and Wood are unavailable. Rapada is pretty worthless. And Samardzija is unrealistic.

That leaves Marmol, who is off to a decent start, as a starter, and hasn't thrown since the 14th.

So I'm guessing the only option they have is to demote Cedeno and call up Marmol.

Yeah...I don't see Lou demoting Theriot...he's one of the few guys that's hit consistently on this team so far.

We could always put Ohman on the DL with something made up... "elbow soreness" or something.

He'd have to go along willingly. Given his past injury issues, and going off of more or less unsubstantiated stories about his somewhat confrontational nature, I don't see that happening.

Wuertz threw 11 pitches yesterday. Ohman and Howry each threw 9. The bullpen hasn't been "burned." There's no need to bring someone up for that reason.

MLB isn't the NBA. They monitor this kind of stuff quite abit.

where are you getting your pitch counts?

Wuertz threw 35, Ohman threw 22 and Howry threw 21 according to the mlb.com box score.

It would have been remarkable if Wuertz got 6 outs with 9 pitches.

The only person who didn't have to exert himself was Scott Eyre. Everyone else had a pitch count over 20, which for a reliever is significant. Yes, some people are going to have to take one for the team, but we could avoid that situation and call someone up.

Haha. I was looking at the wrong column in Fred's useless stats. Thanks.

Anyway, Eyre threw all of 2 pitches yesterday, so he should be fine. And Cotts, Dempster, Howry, and Wuertz all got the day off on Monday. No reliever has thrown more than 68 pitches total in the last week. The bullpen should not be fatigued.

If Z performs anything like he did in the first 2 weeks, we'll have a tired bullpen after tonight for sure though.

The way Z is pitching tonight, we'll need to finish the game with Hill and go to a four-man rotation.

Wow.
