A rookie fresh from the minors is about to change the face of baseball: A female umpire is set to work a major league exhibition game for the first time in almost 20 years.

Ria Cortesio, ready to start the season in Class AA, will be on the bases Thursday for a game between the Cubs and the Arizona Diamondbacks in Mesa, Ariz.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Cortesio said Monday night. “There will be a lot more people in the stands than I’m used to.”

No female umpire ever has worked in the majors during the regular season. Pam Postema was the last woman ump to call big league exhibitions, back in 1989 – she was in spring training for two years before getting released.

As long as she has better eyes than either Angel Hernandez, CB Bucknor, or Bruce Froemming, I'm alright with it.

To me, it seems racist...

haha! Ditto my man. Angel Hernandez is the worst. I'll never forget the horrible call he blew that cost Zambrano the no hitter against the D-Backs a few years ago.

In all seriousness, good for her. Her gender doesn't matter to me.

i wish Gabrielle would ump some cubs games. that way i wouldn't care as much when they lose.

She will probably be on her best umping behavior wanting to impress and keep the job. I say it's great. Lots of female fans are very knowledgeable about the game. Finally one gets to take the field.

The lovely Ria Cortesio...

you like, Chris?

i could set you up. i grew up with Ria and we remain very close friends to this day. quad cities represent!

she's a gymnast and a very smart girl--got into MIT but decided on Rice, threw off the shackles of the workaday world to pursue her dream. hasn't given up though she's spent more than her recquisite time at AA without being offered a crew chief's position.

cardinal fan growing up, though she always made me jealous by telling stories about my favorite cubs as they passed through west tenn.

she tells everyone that her father is carlton fisk, which is weird.

great to see her getting some pub on SC, let's all hope against hope that she makes it. it's starting to look better for her every day.

The quote was a reference to the Diamond Jaxx broadcasts over the years. When Ria would be part of the crew for the game, Ron would always introduce her as "The lovely Ria Cortesio". Sorry for the confusion.
