Per Chicagosports.com:

The Cubs are shutting down Kerry Wood until further notice after he experienced shoulder problems during Sunday's outing against the Angels in which Wood gave up a three-run homer in one inning.

and this:

Felix Pie was one of four players optioned to Triple-A Iowa as the Cubs made their third round of roster cuts. Catcher Koyie Hill, infielder Tomas Perez and left-handed pitcher Les Walrond were also assigned to Iowa.

I don't know how I feel about Ronnie this year - I had such high hopes for him last year . . . well, maybe he can surprise me?? :?

He's going to be a backup this year, so he's not being counted on to do much.

He's certainly the best option available if Lou feels we really need a spare MI.

Besides, it's not a smart use of valuable resources to trade for a backup MI. Would giving up Marmol be worth the value a guy like Barmes would give us over Ronny? Certainly not.

I agree, trading in this situation isn't really a good option. But my concern is whether RonnieC can improve his offense whilst sitting on the bench . . . I guess we'll see. As far as a backup MI, I know he'll do fine defensively - and he's cheap!

we have a backup infielder, his name is Ryan Theriot and he's better than Clint Barmes

You're right - so does that make Ronnie our backup-backup middle infielder?? In what situtation do you see him playing??

It's generally a good idea to have 2.

They want Ronny so that

1)Theriot can get some pinch-hitting appearances earlier in games-If you pinch-hit Theriot with him being the only backup infielder, then one injury to Ramirez, Izturis, or DeRosa later in a ballgame and you have absolutely no backup.

2) Theriot and DeRosa can play 2B and RF against left-handers-if you're planning to use either of those guys as a possible platoon with Jacque, then you have to have another backup IF.

3) If an IF is gone for just a day or two (tweaked a hamstring or something, like Izturis might do over the season) you need somebody to be able to be a backup infielder on those days without putting anybody on the DL.

Cedeno might not get all that many starts as the 2nd backup infielder, but he definitely is needed so that people like Theriot can get off the bench more often.

I'd imagine it's a better idea to carry an extra outfielder than an extra middle infielder. Most of the playing time that player is going to get is going to be pinch hitting, so it's probably a good idea to have a better hitter.

Perhaps, but if you count Floyd, Theriot and Ward, the Cubs already have three guys on their bench that can play the outfield. When you factor in that DeRosa can, and likely will, move there to platoon with Jones against some lefties, the Cubs pretty much have the OF covered.

If they went with Pagan, then Theriot would be the only infielder on the bench and DeRosa couldn't platoon with Jones. Cedeno or some other middle infielder who is better is the way to go.

I would love to see Cedeno in AAA because I think he has figured some things out and could really thrive in Iowa this season. Cedeno putting up great numbers for a full season in AAA will give the Cubs the confidence to let Izturis go at the end of the season. Despite his rookie season, I still think Cedeno can be a good major league SS. He's still young enough.

Whoa, whoa, whoa.

It took this long for Les Walrong to be sent down to AAA?

Why is he still on the roster again?

His spring was shockingly decent.

Though I still don't want him on the team.

Well, Tomas Perez didn't make the team. Sanity triumphs so far under the reign of Piniella.

Also, the conversation about Walrond has reminded me just how bad the Cubs rotation actually was last year. We had both Les Walrond AND Ryan O'Malley start multiple games.

Because this is still the Cubs.

Can I amend your statement? two of three can play outfield, the book is still out of Floyd if he can actually cath a ball on the run, on a sunny day
