I know it's still early, but I thought it would be interesting to give a grade to how our manager has done so far. I know there were a lot of people who didn't want Lou selected, but thus far I am very very impressed.

My grade is an A-

It's all talk right now, with very little substance and zero results. But I'd give him an A, I guess. I question how willing he is to accept Wade Miller's performance to date, and I really don't like that Tomas Perez is being given a shot at the 25th spot on the roster. But I like how much he's stressed the importance of walks, and he appears to be handling the spring pretty well.

But this is like grading kids for how they dress on their first day of class.

My two favorite decisions are Murton as #2/Izturis #8, and Theriot making the team. I really feel that he's going to play performers, not just veterans as you know who did.

If Murton gets 500+ ABs and the vast majority of them are in the 2-hole, that will be my favorite decision. I'm not sold that will happen.

I understand the tentiveness, but with Baker, this wouldn't even stand a chance. Lou has already mentioned Murton as #2 -- and we're only in Spring Training.

How can a manager be graded when he hasn't even managed a regular season game yet?

Don't kill our Sweet Lou buzz man!

He gets an "A+"!!!!!!!!

how about an I, for incomplete

I agree...half the time when a game is on, I forget he is even there. Notice how they are interviewing different people from the dugout when in the past they always interviewed the manager. He has only been on once. Says something.

I don't know what this means. Or what you think this says. I do know Lou has been all over the place as far as interviews are concerned. He doesn't seem to turn down any requests. Don't really think that means anything, other than he's more comfortable with the media than Dusty was.

My question was not how Lou has performed as a game manager, but how has he done thus far? I know it is early, but he already has had a lot of face time with the media, made some major decisions, and given us quite a few quotes in stark contrast to Dusty.

I will give him a grade after the 1st month, mid season, and then a final grade.

You don't have to participate if you don't want to. :)

Based solely on what he's said since ST started, I'll admit I'm impressed. But I'd rather wait a couple of months before I start grading him.

I agree. If the Cubs are battling the Pirates for last place, all of these positive grades will change quickly. On the other hand, if he's got the team playing .600+ baseball, he will be the undisputed toast of the town.

While I like most of the things Lou has said and done so far, I'm still really interested in seeing how he handles the SP before I get too excited one way or the other. That was probably my biggest concern coming in. I would like to see a) how he reacts if/when Marquis or Miller (or whoever) crap the bed; and b) how he limits pitcher abuse.

So you're ok with a little abuse? Are you talking on the mound or Rob Dibble-type abuse?

Echoing the sentiment that has been expressed by many, I think it is too soon.

Have I liked what I've heard and seen thus far? Certainly. But it is far too early to see how this will all play out. I'm cautiously optimistic, but I still have to see how he handles things this season and beyond.

ha...yes, i'll endorse that kind of abuse, purely for the entertainment.

Lou so far A-

Gerald Perry A+

-I have only wathced a few games this year when they were on, but the Cubs look much more patient than they have in previous years. Working the count more seems like it is part of the plan and I am glad to see they are willing to wait for the pitch they are looking for. Keep it up Gerald.

Too early to call this one IMO, but he and Perry certainly have made the offense more patient at the plate! I like the acquisitions we made and with Lou being the manager, it played a part in the guys choosing to come here.

If I had to give a grade though, and from what I've read in game threads and seen on TV how he handles the players, I'd give him a at least a B+ thus far.

He was hired to manage the club during the regular season. He hasn't done that yet.

Early returns have been relatively positive, but he hasn't actually done what he was hired to yet. You just can't grade him.

He was hired (at a kingly fee) to lead the Cubs to a world series victory. Hopefully he doesn't consider that a april-october job.

What's done to prepare for the regular season cannot be measured until we see the impact it has on the regular season.

C+

There are some decisions I don't care for, but oh well. It's too early. A C+ is "above average".

That and talk is cheap. I'll need to see him not bunt in the 1st inning, not let a starter throw 125 pitches and not start Izturis because he's a veteran before it goes up. Hopefully it will.
