I have been lurking on here for a while, but this subject has moved me to post. Here goes:

I have a big head. I am a 7 5/8 or 7 3/4 depending on the hat. Furthermore, those low-profile pieces of crap don't look right on me no matter the size. Thus, the classic MLB Authentic 5950 is virtually the only hat that I can wear consistently that looks and feels right on my giant melon. I love baseball caps. So, I have purchased several 5950s over the years.

Today is the beginning of the realization of the nameless fear that has haunted my dreams lo these many years: the MLB Authentic caps are changing. I see this as the first step toward MLB making the on-field head covers the same low-profile style that you see every "normal" headed college kid sporting these days. Us large-gorded individuals (can you hear me Lou?) will be forced to retreat into the world of throwbacks. Excuse me while I go puke.

WOOO. I'm a just like you I wear the same hat sizes, though I've gone exclusively to 7 3/4. I also can not wear anything that isn't true fitted.

Oh I get it. I think those high profile ones are goofy looking. I've got a huge head myself, and don't wear hats often, but when I do, I just get the largest version of the low profile one.
The low-profile ones do look better on some of us who have big heads. I'm not one of those guys. My last girlfriend told me I should always stick with the high profile ones. To be fair, the high profile jobs look excessively goofy in those pictures. They look a lot better when they have been broken in a bit.

Fairly early in the break-in process:

Count me in as one of the folks that likes the high profile hats. I may buy a home and a road hat before these changes take place, just in case I don't like the new ones.

With that being said, if the new hats cut down on the sweat issue of the hats shrinking and stinking to high heaven, I guess I'm all for it.

For those of you out there that have problems with your old hats shrinking you should try popping the plastic sizing in the hat.

Actually, that picture of the "Low Profile" looks like it is a "no structure" hat - low profile still have the material in them that gives the hat structure in the front, it just is lower than the "5 gallon bucket" hats that 5950 is.

I personally can't stand High profile hats, or the floppy unstructured ones. I really like the old BP hats and there elasticity, as the wool ones will shrink after a few good sweats.

Technically, you are correct. However, most don't even bother to make a distinction between low-profile and unstructured (usually unstructured is considered a subset of low profile). I didn't see the need to make that distinction in this thread because we are really talking more about the change to the high profile ones more than what they might someday become.

That said, my high profile hats get much closer to a low profile structured hat after they are broken in. I don't really like the way they look brand new.

I used to always wear the 5950 "official" game hat. When I look at pictures of me back in the day wearing them, it just looks goofy. Nike makes a great low profile Cubs hat, but it is adjustable - not fitted.

I had to buy a new one recently because my old one smells like beer (I have no problem with this, but my wife must have thrown it away). Seems like I had a bit too much fun at Hi-Tops last time I was in Chicago and had to pour a beer over my own head.

Same thing for me. Now I just wear them lower on my head and break them in differently. I can compare pictures from, say, 1993 to pictures from now where I am wearing 5950s. They look like two totally different hats. To each his own.

Also a fine cap (incidentally, I also have 2).

This board needs more serious hat discussion.

I own last year's official BP hat and have no plans to buy anymore hats. That cap is so awesome, why bother?

The only 5950s that look goofy are the ones worn by flatbilling dorks.

That's stupid.

my darling husband wears a size 8 hat, so I can sympathize with those of you that are nervous about this change. With that said, however, I would say that he's had good experience with the mesh L/XL hats that flex. Who knows, maybe the new ones will fit better!?!

This guy begs to disagree.

7 5/8 here. I really hope they dont screw it up too much for us big-mellon'd people. I am still excited about the non-wool stuff tho.

6 and 7/8 here!

My BP hat fits like a glove. Also the small CC retro cub hats made by some company I've never heard of fit like a charm.

yes, isn't that the truth! For some reason, he doesn't appreciate me pointing out that he has a big melon, either. All the more space for brain, if you ask me :)

Let us unite, brother. =D>

BTW, karenmac it is comforting to know that some ladies appreciate a large melon.

I completely agree with the poster who said that this forum needs more serious hat discussion. Uniforms in general are of crucial importance.

I wandered into my local LIDS store to check out this hat. I love the way it feels! Its so light! But I hate the way it looks.

Some of the hat designs out now a days look putrid. Like stated above, nothing beats my old 5950 hats.

Which hat are you talking about? According to the article the new version of the 5950 won't be available until the end of March.

Oops! I guess I shuold have clarified. Its the new BP hat with the new design. That hat is much lighter than the old BP hats, and it fits nicer.

Still doesn't beat the 5950 though.
