Is it possible that Kerry's "fuller" frame the past few years had anything to do with his injuries? I would think not since they seem to be structural shoulder issues and not leg problems, but you never know. Medical professionals have any insight?

I'm not a medical professional but I read where Kerry attributed his weight gain to being simply inactive.

“Yeah, it’s actually the most I ever put on, too,” he quipped. “I knew I had some weight to lose. Obviously, I put on some pounds at the end of the season, sticking around after I got hurt and not playing and sitting around eating.”

remember years ago when Kerry had his one healthy year and there was a guy named "Mack" (don baylor Hiree) Mack worked him out hard and he whined about the guy, now he is born again fitness freak.

I talked to the Syracuse Chiefs trainer and he said that a lot of the players don't work hard or see the value of keeping in shape until they get hurt. They have this "I'm indestructible" feeling and just think they are every going to need to do the things they need to do to stay healthy and prolong their careers and for many it's too late when they finally realize this.

So you are saying there is wisdom in old age??

Well experience anyways in a lot of cases. The saying "if I knew then what I know now" really applies to this big time.

could be, or his wife said "Kerry, you are starting to look like John Kruk."

I know that would do it for me.

Or maybe she said, "Kerry if you don't lose some weight, you're not going to be able to get your fat arse out of this hot tub."

If Sarah is in there too, is that really such a bad thing?

some like Ken griffey Jr. it took a few more injuies to figure it out. I just can't imagine not having a personal off season training, if nothing more they are tax deductable.

If I were playing and had the leverage I'd negotiate for one in my contract, and a chef too. If I were a team owner, I'd seriously think about giving the services to my "franchize" players. To me it makes good business sense, like investing in routine maintenance.

great idea a chef I always love hearing about stars who have trouble losing weight when they have a personal chef and trainer.

I'll do that next time I negotiate a major league contract :)

I think I can second that one

You'd think after getting 10 or so million a year you could afford one yourself.

This is a little off the subject of Kerry's weight but I am encouraged by what he's saying lately. He seems very confident in his health.

Kerry Wood threw 25 pitches off the mound Monday...

"Today was probably 80-85 percent [of normal velocity]," Wood said. "Once this chest thing becomes a non-issue and I get it completely out of the way, I'll be able to turn it up

...Wood believes he's already prepared for back-to-back assignments.

"They're going to be extra cautious," he said. "I've thrown anywhere from 55 pitches off the mound to coming back and playing long toss the next day, so I don't see any reason why I wouldn't be able to [go back-to-back].

"As of now, I definitely could. I don't think there will be any back-to-backs in the first week or two [of exhibition games

I also found this interesting:

Ryan Dempster, on Will Ohman's suggestion the Cubs play heavy-metal music at Wrigley Field when the closer enters a game: "They can play Frank Sinatra for all I care."... Michael Barrett has a new Web site called barrettbaseball

No, but I remember when he had his two healthy years (not missing a single start in either 2002 or 2003).
