Posted this in the Kerry Wood injury thread, but it might be worth its own thread.

MESA, Ariz. -- The good news on the first day of workouts for Cubs pitchers and catchers Thursday was that Mark Prior and Wade Miller both threw off a mound. The bad news was that Kerry Wood was sidelined with an injury.

Wood bruised his right side when he fell out of a hot tub at his home Monday night. He'll be sidelined four to five days. His ego was hurt more than his rib cage.

"I'm just getting ready for Spring Training, feeling good," Wood said. "I [got out of the tub] and landed on my stomach and my chest and didn't feel too good. It's that time of year for me."

Wood, limited to four starts last season because of shoulder problems, had been throwing well the last two months leading up to the start of camp. This was not how he wanted to start Spring Training.

"I've got six weeks to get ready," he said. "I feel like I need 2 1/2 [weeks]. I was ready to go. I'd like to show people I'm ready instead of getting ice packs and people asking me questions. I am ready to go, I will be ready to go."

More about Prior and Miller:

Prior and Miller definitely looked healthy when they threw 30 pitches in the same group as Carlos Zambrano, Ted Lilly, Scott Eyre and Will Ohman. Both are coming off seasons in which they were hampered by injuries.

"They both threw the ball well, they really did," Piniella said of Prior and Miller. "It'd be like signing a couple more free agent pitchers [if they're ready]. These kids are good. Let's keep them throwing and keep them healthy and keep them working."

 :D

I got really giddy and happy when I read that, then I started hyperventilating thinking of a rotation of a completely healthy zambrano prior and miller, and what they accomplished early in their career, and the rotation, especially when miller went 18 and...... ok... calm down.....breathe.....

The Cubs would have to be absolutely idiotic to do something like that.

Which is why they probably will....

You gotta love the quotes from Lou.

Maybe I'm naive, but I really think there is no chance that Rich Hill will not be in the Cubs rotation. I'll be willing to eat major crow if I'm wrong. I'm saying there is no chance at all, barring injury, or some ridiculously terrible spring performances (which really shouldn't come into play, but they are the Cubs) by Hill coinciding with some ridiculously good performances by a potential replacement.

By ridiculously bad, I mean worse than 2003 Shawn Estes.

Sadly, I wouldn't say "no chance." I've read in more than one article that the only gimmes in the rotation are Zambrano, Lilly and Marquis, and then Miller, Prior, Marshall and Hill fight it out for the other two spots. It's ridiculous that the Cubs' best player from the second half of last year isn't guaranteed a spot. But this is the Cubs we're talking about, and you don't go 100 years without winning a world series by making wise personnel decisions.

Marquis becomes a long man. My guess is that someone (Marquis, Hill, Prior, or Miller) will get traded for a SS who can hit at the end of July.

I've read those things, too. I just attribute that more to media stupidity than Cubs stupidity (which there's plenty to go around of, as you pointed out, as well).

If they're all healthy, to begin the season Miller makes the most sense there...I don't think you can trade marquis till June or so since we just signed him...

That probably makes much more sense. I just have no confidence in Marquis at all. He's been through Duncan and Mazzoni and they both couldn't "figure him out". I have no faith that Larry will do any better.

I think they figured him out just fine. He just wouldn't listen. He's got a reputation for being quite stubborn.

I agree. How will Larry counteract Marquis "stubborness"?

On the flip side, Marquis has been great in his first year with each of his two clubs (if you disregard the cup of coffee he had in 2000), so I'm hoping that extends to the Cubs as well.

I'm glad the Cubs didn't guarantee Hill a spot. He could become complacent over the winter. It's good to keep those competitive fires burning. That said, I'd keep Hill in the rotation unless Marquis's ERA is 2 runs lower. And his mechanics are more sound. And Hill is injured.
Posted
If everyone is healthy. Marquis shoudl really have to show something this spring to get a spot in the rotation. However, after paying him that much money they're not goin to put him in long relief. That is a shame because I hope everyone can stay healthy this spring and make everyone earn their spots in the rotation.

Now, CubinNY, you know that's ridiculous. That's what the Cubs would do if they were smart. C'mon.

I see:

Zambrano

Lilly

Hill

Prior

Guzman

With Marquis in the bullpen as the long relief/we don't care anymore option and Miller at AAA.

Reason I say Miller at AAA is because he hasn't thrown a lot of innings in a while and I think he still needs more time to work out some kinks.
