I noticed Mike Brown goes down, Bears finish with best record in NFC twice and go to Superbowl once.

Seattle had the best record in the NFC in 2005. I personally think a healthy Mike Brown is more important to the defense than Lance Briggs. Thats more an appreciation of Mike Brown then a knock on Briggs.

A healthy Brown isn't a real thing. He might be some what healthy in 2007, but the odds of him returning in 2008 are slim and none. Briggs can provide much more longterm value to the team.

Agreed. But thankfully its not a question of keeping Briggs or Brown.

Mike Brown? He's in no way more important than Briggs.

I noticed a pattern the past two seasons...Mike Brown goes down, this D goes south....

I would say Tommie Harris had much more to do with the defensive struggles at the end of the year than Mike Brown. Mike Brown's injury only hurt us so far as the safety was one of the weakest areas depth-wise. So long as safety is something addressed in the draft, Mike Brown isn't a huge issue.

That being said, I'd like to see them keep Brown this season. I see no need to cut him for what little cap space he'll provide, especially if they aren't after any big free agents.

Oh I agree. I wasn't advocating getting rid of Brown. We just need some depth behind him, because you can't count on a full season out of him.

I just thought of something. The Bears are looking like locks to score compensatory picks this year. I cant remember the last time, if ever, the bears got even a 7th rounder.

So...I just almost had a heart attack...I saw this on the ticker:

"Benson to have surgery, likely out '07"

Kris Benson, phew.

He's out for half my 2007 season in Madden. I've got Adrian Peterson and Anthony Thomas splitting time now that I traded Jones to the Jets. Good thing Rex is just ungodly good.

The Bears would be so screwed if that happened. They would have to go RB in the first 2 rounds.

Tank Johnson was sentenced to 120 days in jail. They took him away immediately...

I was kind of hoping they wouldn't have to spend a draft pick on a DTackle. They've spent a bunch on them already and need so much more.

It's 4 months on paper.....likely reduced to 2 months.

Tank didn't even practice until August last year with his injury. This year he'll be ready to go mid-April with early release.

Bears don't need to draft DT. Dvoracek is like an extra 2nd round pick this year.

NFL suspension is likely, Bears cutting him is still possible.

We don't? We only have, i think, 3 on the roster counting Tank Johnson. Is Anthony Garay still on the roster?

Remember, Ian Scott and Alfonso Boone are both gone.

Can't Idonije play either DL spot?

Why let a solid DE rotation get watered down?

Face it people, we need to either draft or sign another defensive linemen. Its not that big of a deal

Ian Scott -> Dvoracek

Boone -> Idonije/Garay

Personally, I like the Dvoracek/Idonije options better than Scott or Boone, they just haven't had a chance to show what they can really do.

But, you're right, we could maybe use another filler DT. At least for camp, maybe see what he can do. I certainly wouldn't be spending a high draft pick on one though. Pick a journeyman-type up in FA? Possibly.

Johnson is no less irresponsible now that a judge has punished him than he was after the original incident when a Super Bowl berth hung in the balance of the Bears' decision to keep him. If the Bears were going to cut ties with him, the time to do so was in December, not now.

Haugh makes a good point, I just hope that's how the Bears see it. They could view this as an opportunity to cut bait. But in reality, the sentencing is no real justification. It's not like he did another bad thing, even though it's another bad headline.

Haugh also noted the Bears should go out and resign Scott:

The Bears' smartest response to Thursday's sentence should be diligence rather than discipline. They now need a veteran defensive tackle to prepare for Johnson's inevitable absence and Harris' possible health concerns. So go re-sign defensive tackle Ian Scott, an unrestricted free agent, before either the Chiefs or Broncos pry away the type of player who is the anti-Tank. It won't begin to answer every question that has come up in the tumultuous last month, but it would be a good start.

I'd much rather they resign Scott, then they can keep the tackle rotation as Harris, Dusty, Scott, Johnson and Idonije, and they don't have to use up a draft pick on this position. If there's a stud available with the first pick, that's fine. But I'd rather they go out and draft O lineman, DBs, a RB and possibly a WR or TE. And depending on Briggs' situation, a LB.

Sounds good, but I think Haugh was referring to re-signing Scott not Boone. Of the two, if we were going to re-sign someone I'd prefer Scott.

I am unaware of what Haugh is referring to with Harris' "possible health concerns." My understanding was, he'll be 100% and ready to go for the season. Maybe I missed something.

Thanks for catching that, not sure why I wrote Boone.

Any player coming back from that type of injury is going to be a concern. There's no such thing as being 100% certain he'll come back good as new.

I think Scott is pretty good and I definitely would like to see him resigned if the price is right.

NFLDraftCountdown has the Bears drafting Dwayne Jarrett, Ben Grubbs OG Auburn, and Justin Durant OLB Hampton.

I would be please if this actually happened.

I absolutely love Durant. He could be a great pick in the 3rd round. I'd be very happy with that draft. WR isn't the biggest need, but if Jarrett is around at 31, there's a good chance he's the best player on the board at that point. And WR will become a need position after 2007. Moose is on his way out. Berrian could be a FA. Bradley hasn't been healthy or good enough.

That draft would be near perfect for me. Get a top 5 WR. Get the best pure guard in the draft and my #1 sleeper at OLB.

Wow I thought Jarrett was projected a lot higher...I didn't think he'd be there at 31. Is his value dropping?

I heard he runs a 4.6-4.7 40.

Irregardless(espcecially with Hester moving to WR) there is 0 need for WR.

There's no need with Bradley and Hester who are still learning/have to learn the position, an aging Moose who has been tailing off in years past and then Bernard Berrian? I'm not all for spending a 1st rounder on a WR, but you have to bring in some bodies who fit into the team at that position.
