Say Prior AND Miller come back healthier and just as strong as they were at their best (insert hel lfreezing over joke here)...

What becomes of the rotation then?

Marquis becomes the 2nd most expensive middle reliever in Cubs history. Kerry was 1st.

I hope you're right. The thought of Marquis starting and Hill in the pen or at AAA sickens me.

Also, I find it very cool that I can post here on my new PS3.

If everybody is actually healthy and ready to go, I think Prior gets traded.

If memory serves, Wade Miller signed his deal after becoming a free agent, so that means that we can't trade him, Marquis, or Lilly until June 15th. Zambrano isn't going anywhere, and Hill is cheap and has great upside. Meanwhile, Prior has a questionable track record, but with another year and a half of club control and some upside.

If Prior is healthy and throwing well for the first month, I wouldn't be surprised to see him shipped off with Jacque and maybe a couple relievers for some help at SS.

IMO, if all are healthy Miller will become the long man in the pen and spot starter as needed.

That SS name better be Alex Rodriguez.

If Prior is healthy and ptiching well he's too important to trade.

can we throw in Wood?

Reality is marquis will start, they paid (overpaid) to much to have him on the sidelines.

Zambrano

Miller- Love to see him return to his former form, and could, it is only his first surgery.

Hill-Lefty

Prior

Lilly/Marshal- I like Marshal because he is big and strong with what looks like a high learning curve. reality is that the cubs paid for lilly so he has the spot.

You wouldn't get nearly as much.

If, IF, Zambrano doesn't suddenly crash due to injury, Hill keeps being the 2nd half Hill, or at least something close to it, Miller is looking good and Lilly isn't totally flaming out, I would also agree with seriously considering a better-pitching Prior, for the right deal.

I think the biggest factor might be Guzman. If he can finally turn it around and show that he can step up a la Hill, I'd push a healthy Prior for a big trade.

If they are making a playoff push, no way they trade Prio.

If they're stumbling over good starters, they might.

That's a gigantic "what if" scenario, and one not likely to happen, but if Zambrano and Hill do what they did the 2nd half of last year, Guzman breaks out, and either Lilly and/or Miller do well, they might take a shot at going for an impact bat that shoves the offense out ahead.

Marquis will also start because he's proven to be durable over the past three years - 190IP+ in 2004-06. Lilly will also get a spot in the rotation for similar reasons.

Prior and Miller will battle it out for the final spot. If either doesn't show the health or durability the club would like, the team will call up someone from the minors.

Marshall had some good starts last year, but the Cubs want him to start off the season back in the minors, so unless Guzman shines, we can expect him to be at the top of the list for replacements for the fifth spot.

The realistic rotation will be (with Pecota ERA projections in parentheses):

Z (3.79)

Lilly (4.29)

Hill (4.24)

Marquis (5.00)

Prior/Miller (4.57/5.01)

Wow, a whole lot of stock is being put into a "what if" for Guzman. He has been doing the what if for him for a cpl of years. He is so up and down in his performances. I would like to see him do well enough in the minors and a cpl of starts at ST to become trade bait.

I still say Miller and Prior will be the X-factor, we know they have the ability but is the shoulder ready for hard starts.

Marquis seems to be the "put your head down and pray" factor.

Marshal should be on the team because we need another middle linebacker.
