Tony Armas Jr.-S-Pirates Feb. 1 - 4:54 pm et

Pirates signed RHP Tony Armas Jr., who had been with the Nationals, to a one-year contract with a club option for 2008.

Armas hasn't been any good since returning from shoulder surgery in 2004, with a 4.88 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP standing as his best marks from the last three years. That he's on the right side of 30 gives some hope for the future, but he just doesn't have the same stuff he used to. The Pirates would probably be better off with Shawn Chacon as their fifth starter. The two will compete for the job, and Armas may have the advantage, mainly because Chacon's contract isn't guaranteed.

Good for them...I was afraid STL would sign him and Dave Duncan would turn him into Cy Young.

i don't think this is a bad signing, especially at that price. in fact, i quite like it (for the pirates, that is).

Compared to Gil Meche, this is a Steal!

Hey Jake, scored tickets to a Red Sox/Pirates game in Bradenton on my next business trip. Should be fun to see baseball and catch the Pirates first hand. Just thought I would rub it in ;)

I'm Jealous. One year I'll have to make it down there!
