Lovely. That's all we need. Rupert Murdoch approving payroll and personnel decisions. It worked out SO well for the Dodgers.

I would cry loud, long, and hard if Murdock was a part owner of the Cubs.

I might even stop rooting for them. I can't say if I could though, my love is pretty unconditional.

I look forward to Bill O'Reilly taking over as the Cub President!

I'm curious on how MLB is going to take this. Is it a possible conflict of interest?

What sort of conflict?

This is the sort of thing people were talking about when they warned that simply getting new ownership would not guarantee better ownership.

Murdock owning part of the Dodgers and Cubs.

Yep....be careful for what you wish for.

I thought Newscorp was completely out of the Dodgers ownership situation. Didn't they sell it all to McCourt?

I don't think Murdock owns part of the Dodgers any longer.

But Murdock is all about what he calls "synergy". Owning the network, owning the ballclub, owning the distribution, and on and on.

The biggest change would be at the Tribune though. They'd likely become as well respected as the NY Post. It would mark a sea change at the newspaper. Not good.

I don't know. I was going by the post by CiNY.

This would be an absolute nightmare.

It's not like I don't deal with the devil that is Rupert Murdoch in my life already. I watch Simpsons, Family Guy, and American Dad, despite it being on his network. I watch It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, despite it being on another of his networks. Sports all the time on FOX.

And yet, this would make me cry just a little bit inside.

As well as Newsday and the Baltimore Sun. I think one interesting thing will be what happens to the NY Post. Murdock's long coveted Newsday and federal rules prohibits him from owning both. The question becomes who buys the Post, I don't know if Gannett and McClatchy (the two most likely newspaper companies to buy a major market paper) or any other buyer is willing to jump into the New York media bloodbath, I mean market.

Whoops....reading comp 101. I don't remember if Murdock sold his ownership of the Dodgers.

Paul Sullivan would go from smearing and writing gossip about the Cubs to the Editor's office. He's just the kind of journalist Murdock loves. You have to write a catchy headline.

Just think...we could get Fair and Balanced Cubs Coverage. I can see it now:

Cubs Bats come Alive in the 7th scoring 3 runs!

final score 14-3

Blech and double blech. If we thought the Trib was a money grubbing cheapskate corporation...

If Murdoch or Murdock or however you spell his name buys the Trib, I fully expect we'll be back to 85M payrolls within 3-4 seasons.

The Tribune Company, which was put up for sale in September, has attracted interest from News Corp chairman and chief executive Rupert Murdoch, who is understood to be interested in acquiring a share of the company in order to streamline production costs at The New York Post.

However, US competition laws would prevent News Corp from owning two New York titles -- The New York Post and Tribune-owned Newsday -- and it is reported that Murdoch has no plans to acquire the Tribune Company outright.

I don't understand what that means. It looks like one paragraph contradicts the other?

He wants to be part of the ownership group, but not take on 100% of the company.

How do they contradict one another? The first paragraph says he wants to "acquire a share of the company." The second says he "has no plans to acquire [the company] outright." Seems pretty straight forward to me. He wants to become a partner in the Tribune Company but not own it all by himself.

I guess I don't understand the difference between part ownership and ownership. I understand it better now. He will have an interest, but not a controlling insterest.

Then they would bring the opposing manager on and yell at him for a bit, (very) occasionally letting him speak.

ewwwwwwwww

It seems that what he is doing is trying to recieve interest in the Newspaper aspect of the tribune. It doesnt necessarily mean he wants interest in the Chicago Cubs. Plus, didnt the Chandlers say they would be selling the Cubs off anyway?

Don't forget that Murdoch almost destroyed the Sun-Times when he bought it from Marshall Field in 1983 or '84. The Sun-Times has never recovered from that disaster. The last thing Chicago needs is for Murdoch to ruin another of its newspapers.
