Jon would remind us that Loretta went to Northwestern at every opportunity. No thanks.

Haven't you brought that up in every Loretta thread in the past 6 months, Mr. I met NU grad Joe Girardi more recently than you?

Personally I liked Loretta having watched him in Boston alot last season. He's a decent OBP guy and as the old saying goes "can handle the bat." He also played a very good 2B defensively for Boston.

I would have preferred a 1-2 year contract to him for less money that we ended up having to pay DeRosa for more years, but maybe DeRosa can convince me next season that he's worth it.

I don't think he's missed a lot of games. He was brought up as a part time player who impressed with each opportunity he was given. He forced teams to play everyday with his production.

I've watched Loretta play a lot, and he's about as fundamentally sound as gets. And the OBP is pretty solid as well.

Therefore, he doesn't fit the profile to be a Cub.

and I could go on. but you are right. between Milwaukee and San Diego, he wasn't given a chance to be a starter....during that two month stretch he spent in Houston. geez is the man holding him down or what.

edit-more seriously and to the point, he was always considered a regular when on the Brewers, but could never spend a full season on the field due to injury after injury after injury.

I could be wrong here, but I recall a quote where Loretta was asked about playing for the Cubs and he said he would not be interested.

Although, I can't remember his reasoning and when or if he really stated this.

I was proven wrong already and I acknowledged it, but nice work digging up those articles. I had already mentioned the San Diego injury, just couldn't recall what it was. The dreaded head first slide into 1b.

I guess I never realized he was hurt as much as he was. Just thought he was a Mark DeRosa type of 5th infielder.

In San Diego, I got to see him play a lot and he always impressed. He's getting up there in age for a 2b now, so I'd be a bit concerned about the OBP getting back up to his prime age production.

I'm shocked teams haven't shown more interest in him, but the 2b market was pretty prime this offseason.

he did have a tough time getting PT at a regular spot on some of those Brewer teams who had a decent infield of Vina, Valentin and Cirillo, but if he could have ever stayed healthy he more than likely would have supplanted either Vina or Valentin, although they did have "scrappy" lovin Lopes and Garner leading them during those years.

he was always a good player. I thought the Cubs should have gone for him after his Houston stint, but the Cubs had one Bobby Hill coming to save them from their second base woes.

To answer the thread question...

Because he's old and getting older. He's also nothing special anymore. If he was, then he'd have a job by now.

No, he's the ULTIMATE mlb gamer.

If only he were the Ultimate Fighting Champion

Barrett has a shot if he gives up baseball.

He'll take on both Oswalt and AJ at the same time!

How is that fair for Barrett? He would be taking on a midget and a mental midget....oh I get it now....

When I saw this thread, I asked myself why would we want Lorreta.

I don't want Loretta because he really doesn't give us anything that we don't already get from Ryan Theriot at a better cost and a much younger player (27 rather than 35!).
