Bernie is very reliable...

Cardinals are standing pat on 3-yr, $20 million offer.... ASTROS and CUBS supposedly offering 3 yrs for more than $30 million.

Suppan. Thanks for giving us the name.

I'd much rather have Suppan than either Lilly or Meche. This FA pitching class is a joke, but Suppan is the lesser of the three evils.

When he started pitching well in the postseason, I was predicting he'd make himself 3/33 in the offseason. I can't believe Lilly might get considerably more.

I'll say this, we could definately do alot worse than Suppan. Sure he will be overpayed, but just like every other single player on the market. People are saying ugh....but he did put up a better ERA than Lilly and Meche, and is still only 31.

Suppan didn't fair well when he played in the American league. I believe Lilly will have better numbers by going to the National league.

I agree. Suppan's numbers are ridicuolously consistent and he's proven durable and reliable in the playoffs. I'd love getting him over either Lilly or Meche. I was wondering why he was getting the backburner...

Suppan's post all star numbers:

94ip 2.39era 1.28whip .253

Lilly's post all star numbers:

80ip 4.61era 1.36whip .256

Meche's post all star numbers:

76ip 5.42era 1.59whip .271

Maybe I take back what I said about Lilly over Suppan. Meche is garbage but we all knew that anyway.

Suppan spent most of his career in the AL, and was as good or better than Lilly most of the time. He had a bad 10 games with Boston, and that's about it.

I don't get how anybody could possibly claim Lilly is considerably better than Suppan.

I'll take Lilly over Suppan any day of the week.

Look at Suppan's innings over the past eight years and the rest of his stats over the past four seasons. He's been the model of consistency and is not at all the gamble the other SP's have been thus far. With Suppan you know what you're getting:

~190 IP

~110K

~60 BB

~4.00 ERA

31-32 Starts

~14 wins

I didn't realize Suppan's numbers were as decent as they are.

I take back most of my "ugh".

co-signed.

I did the same thing back in October when I first looked into his career.

I predicted Jim would be hot and heavy for a halfway decent guy who could go 200 innings. I never realized how frequently Suppan has done that.

With the Cubs, you don't know that last one to be true.

If Maddux could do it...

(Seven Cubs have won 14+ games in the past four seasons.)

If thats true the Cards are offering 3/20M that is way below market. Almost insultingly low.

Hell, if we're giving 4 years to Meche or Lilly, I think Suppan deserves 4/$44M at least. Battle-tested and durable is all I need to know to sign that check. Of course I'm not signing the checks...
