• The Mets may be more inclined to trade rather than pursue a free agent. A starting pitcher is high on the club's list of needs and Javier Vazquez's name has come up repeatedly as an individual high on GM Omar Minaya's list. Minaya has also talked to the White Sox about Mark Buehrle and is believed to have discussed the possibility of trading outfielder Lastings Milledge to Chicago for the left-hander.

why do we care about White Sox trade rumors again?

According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Mariners may be planning to take a serious run at Barry Zito.

It's been assumed that the Mariners would go after Jason Schmidt first, but that might not be the case. "How could we not be interested in a guy like that?" a club insider told the paper. "When you look at the ages, if the money is equal, you'd want to go with the younger guy." The Mets and Rangers could be the chief compeition for Zito. The Mets have scheduled a meeting with agent Scott Boras, and it's been rumored that Texas has a six-year, $102 million offer on the table to the left-hander.

Didn't mean to offend you. I'll leave you guys to the Mariners discussion!

Now the Astros are interested in Schmidt. :x First the Cards and now the Astros. Per Rotoworld

this might mean the inside rumors are that the Cubs are closest so their division rivals are chiming in to drive up the price.

just a thought.

I like the way you think. Hopefully that is the case because if the Astros or Cards get Schmidt and we get Lilly, it will be rough.

Jim needs to pony up. 4/60. I want a WS. Schmidt is a solid #2 and IMO will be worth about 3 years of that.

Agreed. Paying for players in FA is so much more complicated than comparing a price tag to a stat line. Maybe Schimdt, in a vacuum, is not worth $60M or whatever. But the difference between the Cubs rotation with him compared to without him is immensely significant. I'm not saying he's the missing link to WS ring, but he changes the dynamic of the team. All of a sudden, it seems like any price (remember, it's not OUR money at stake here) would be a worthwhile deal.

I say see what it will take to get him for three years, Pay it.

There's a report that Ted Lilly might get 4/44. If that happens there's no way in hell Schmidt could be had for only 4/60.

That could quite possibly be the worst trade I've ever heard (from the Mets standpoint).

You really don't have to go very far back to find a worse one in Mets history.

I know Milledge is good, but I dont see why he is so highly touted. He seems good, but nowhere near great. .828 OPS in the minors this year. 837 last year, pretty good patience, little power. Seems about the same level as Pie and about the same age, yet Milledge is talked about as a superstar and Pie as nothing that special.

All that said, I wouldnt think about trading him for Buerhle or Vazquez

Milledge has started to lose his appeal lately. Isn't he going to have to move out of CF too?

the Mariners moves have an impact on what the Cubs do. the only way this is related to the Cubs is the possible impact it may have on the availability of Zito. so I agree it's relevant, but I don't think the impact it may have on Cubs transactions is why you posted it here.

I would be amazingly shocked if this happens. I'm sure Omar's had better offers for Millege.

According to Phil Rogers, Dave Van Dyck and Paul Sullivan in their Winter Meetings Whispers, the Giants and Orioles are emerging as the main potential suitors for Jacque Jones. And to quote them: "The Cubs' willingness to deal Jones is probably more about his rift with fans than his subpar play in right field."

Thats how you get nearly Derrek Lee production for a smidge over one million dollars. Padres are the big winners so far. They should have a walk to the playoffs barring any Manny to an NL West deal and with that rotation could do some damage in the playoffs. Plus they are going to retain walker!

Steve Phillips reporting on ESPN about a rumored trade he is hearing about:

To Chicago: Jennings

To Colorado: Jones, Marmol, Mullholand

To Pittsburgh: Hawpe

why dont we make a phone call for chris snelling?

seattle seems to be in a giving mood.

Somewhere mentioned the O's young pitching and while Bedard and Loewen are obviously unattainable, I am praying for Penn. I'd prefer him over snelling. Either would be better than Jennings though.

I don't like to give up Marmol, I think either him or Mateo was the most promising of the out of nowheres last year. But then again if we are building our rotation via FA, these guys are expendable.

So Pitt would get Hawpe for just Mullholand?

Great deal for them if true.

I should have known that Terry wasn't pitching anymore. Dude's like 112.

It's Paul Maholm.

And still a great deal for Pitt, if true.

I don't mind giving up Marmol. The Cubs need to start thinning out the log jam with Marmol, Mateo, Marshall and Guzman. Eventually some of these guys are going to get leapfrogged by Gallagher and lower level prospects and have absolutely no value. Edited by Elrhino
