It means it's time to overpay in people instead of money. There's been rumors with names like Peavy, Harden, Hudson, Duke, and more. Obviously some of it is just wishful rumor-mongering, but somebody will be out there.

Agreed. Even if it's only someone like Westbrook or Jennings, we need to get at least one of them. Lilly and Jennings I could tolerate and we could have a decent rotation. Lilly and Meche is garbage.

So you don't want Lilly or Meche, but you do want Jennings, a guy who had an ERA+ below 100 and a WHIP over 1.55 in 2003, 2004, and 2005? And willing to give up minor league talent to get him?

Yes. Jennings is a rental and won't cost us 5/55.

Would you go after Manny? Give the Sox Howry, Marshal, Veal, and Pie. That is a lot, but I would be happy to win a WS and do what Florida did. I just want a WS. Then you can develop a good farm system. A friend of mine is 76 years old. He needs to enjoy at least 1 WS Championship. He has been a Cubs fan for over 55 years. So, with that I say go out and do what you gotta do. Give up whoever you gotta give up. Overpay for Manny and take on his contract.

Manny isn't going anywhere.

Still, you're giving up minor league talent for a rental in a year in which it's unlikely the Cubs will win anything. Don't see the point.

I think Jennings could contribute more than any of our young guys (Ryu, Marmol, Marshall, Mateo) this year. To be honest, I'm not content with playing for 2008 and beyond. I'm growing tiresome, and I think Jennings is a solid 3 or 4 guy.

Ryan Church (2006) = Jason Michaels (2005)

The player pegged by sabr-conscious NSBBers as the ideal CF option, but whom Hendry just isn't going to pursue in a million years.

I think it bears mentioning that Michaels' lackluster production as an everyday player last year (.717 OPS, 87 OPS+) would suggest Hendry was right to ignore the SABRs and avoid Michaels.

I seem to remember most people wanting him as a 4th OF and a platoon option. There were always questions about his everyday ability.

Hendry has never been right to "ignore the SABRs", it's the exact reason why his team sucks and he's desperately throwing cash around.

Bruce already said, emphatically, that Bonds will not be a Cub. I guess it's cool to play fantasy GM and all, but I don't see the point in going through this a 5th time.

Then just ignore the thread.

Just because Hendry isn't smart enough or creative enough to consider it, doesn't mean it isn't worth discussing.

The pitchers left on the market aren't worth pursuing; however, the best hitter on the market is still available for the taking and without a long-term commitment.

Bonds would make this team immensely better.

Putting aside my personal dislike for Bonds, I think it's never going to happen based on the fact that Hendry is on his 'good character guy' kick.

Isn't that an old one? He apparantly kicked the tires on the wife beater. He signed a guy who refused to take the field last year. He's hot after a guy that fought his manager. I think he's lightened up on the character issue, and is just desperate for anybody to take his cash.

But I don't think he'll look into Bonds.

Huh? Since when? Did I miss something?

Had Bonds enough PA to qualify, he would have led the NL in OBP.

He solves our biggest offensive problem, gives our line-up a needed LH bat, and brings plenty of power as well.

He also doesn't require a long-term commitment.

What's not to like? Get on board, Jim.

I should've stated it was just my opinion. I'm just tired of this Manny nonsense. This happens 3-4 times every year it seems and he never goes anywhere.
