It would be a waste to throw 20 million away on the likes of Lilly and Meche.

What is left on the pitching market isn't going to make this team a contender. The Cubs are better off rolling the dice on Miller and Prior's health and the development of Marshall, Mateo, Ryu, and Guzman than to spend loads of cash on Meche and Lilly.

So, what can be done?

Turn this team into an offensive juggernaut by signing the best FA available. That's right, Jim. Barry Bonds is there for the taking!

He's even arrived in Flordia (Link) looking for a job.

Add Bonds for LF, trade Jones for whatever, and trade for Church. Viola...a top five offense.

RF Soriano

CF Church

1b Lee

LF Bonds/Murton

3b Ramirez

C Barrett

2b DeRosa

SS Izturis

Nice line-up.

I said something similar to this in another thread, but I have Soriano at 2B, DeRosa platooning with Jones, and Murton "spelling" Bonds.

Let's do it.

Or call up Cashman and find out what it would take to get ARod..... :-k

ARod's agent told the Yankees that the NTC wouldn't be waived. ARod is staying in NY.

Awww, man....No Andy Roddick for the 2007 season, dang it, you sure know how to break a guy's spirit.

That would be a great lineup to think about... but I just don't think I could bring myself to root for Barry... I would just always be hoping that he got hurt. Not only because I don't want him to break the record but being in front of my favorite red-head in the world (yea its a short list) wouldn't help matters.

Bruce already said, emphatically, that Bonds will not be a Cub. I guess it's cool to play fantasy GM and all, but I don't see the point in going through this a 5th time.

Agreed.

What's the point in any of this? 99% of the players we talk about as potential help for the team will never be Cubs. Just because Jim Hendry is unlikely to do something doesn't mean it's not worth a discussion.

I hadn't seen that, though it's not surprising. Oh well. It sure if fun (agonizing) to dream though.

We've already discussed Bonds. We already know that he won't be playing here, while we didn't know that with guys like Schmidt and Lugo.

And Dunn and Caberra and Abreu and Burrell and ARod and Jennings and Westbrook and (fill in a billion names here).

Last year the most obvious thing Hendry could have done to make this team better in 2007 and 2008 was trade for Bobby Abreu, but it never appeared he ever had the slightest bit of interest. I don't think it was anymore pointless to discuss how he could help the team than any other topic.

Then just ignore the thread.

Just because Hendry isn't smart enough or creative enough to consider it, doesn't mean it isn't worth discussing.

The pitchers left on the market aren't worth pursuing; however, the best hitter on the market is still available for the taking and without a long-term commitment.

Bonds would make this team immensely better.

Ryan Church (2006) = Jason Michaels (2005)

The player pegged by sabr-conscious NSBBers as the ideal CF option, but whom Hendry just isn't going to pursue in a million years.

So what of the public reports that Hendry is going after him?

I think there are some reports that Hendry is interested in Church. Don't know how credible they are, but they're out there.

Really?

And I thought the Church threads were as silly as the Bonds threads or the Dunn threads.

It means it's time to overpay in people instead of money. There's been rumors with names like Peavy, Harden, Hudson, Duke, and more. Obviously some of it is just wishful rumor-mongering, but somebody will be out there.

Agreed. Even if it's only someone like Westbrook or Jennings, we need to get at least one of them. Lilly and Jennings I could tolerate and we could have a decent rotation. Lilly and Meche is garbage.

So you don't want Lilly or Meche, but you do want Jennings, a guy who had an ERA+ below 100 and a WHIP over 1.55 in 2003, 2004, and 2005? And willing to give up minor league talent to get him?

Would you go after Manny? Give the Sox Howry, Marshal, Veal, and Pie. That is a lot, but I would be happy to win a WS and do what Florida did. I just want a WS. Then you can develop a good farm system. A friend of mine is 76 years old. He needs to enjoy at least 1 WS Championship. He has been a Cubs fan for over 55 years. So, with that I say go out and do what you gotta do. Give up whoever you gotta give up. Overpay for Manny and take on his contract.
