Hidalgo had some good years, but either, injuries, age, or lack of steroids has deteriorated his abilities.

 

Last I heard, he was performing well in Winter Leagues.

 

He always played pretty good defense and had a canon for an arm.

 

I'd prefer him on the bench than having Pagan.

No problem with signing Hidalgo to a minor league contract.

 

According to the Fielding Bible, he is one of the best defensive RF in baseball, and there's reason to think his offense could come back around - not to 2003 levels, but enough to make him useful.

minor leauge deals don't really matter to much. This sounds like Grissom from last year.

 

I think Hidalgo has a much better chance of being useful than Grissom....and if he did pan out he would be MUCH more useful than Grissom could have been. Low risk/ high reward.
