What about a guy like Bobby Kielty? Granted he's a .256 career hitter, but his career splits against lefties are .299/.382/.518, and would be a good platoon option for Jones, who can't hit lefty pitching. He probably wouldn't cost much and would be a good bench option.

Also, we would have he and Murton as the red headed teammates.

Can he play CF too?

Never played it regularly, but has appeared in 48 career games there.

We would not like Kielty in CF. I'm fairly certain the Cubs wouldn't consider him as an option there.

I'd love to see Jose Cruz Jr. platoon with Jones. He was DFA'd by the Dodgers in August, but over the last three years, he's had an OBP of .392 (!) against lefties. He can play all outfield positions (he wouldn't be great in center, but he would be better than someone like Kielty), and he'd be cheap.

I thought he was who the Cubs should get for Maddux if they didn't get a prospect.

A Murton type fielder or worse?

I've always kind of liked him as a player. I would not mind him on this team as a cheap 4th OF at all, although I wonder why he's bounced around so much over the last 4 seasons.

Then great minds think alike. :D

He's working as an analyst right now for MLB.com.

Cruz had a .353 OBP for the Dodgers last year. He didn't hit well at all against righties, but he mashed lefties: .420/.522/.942.

You do realize that Murton was ranked as above average by several different defensive metrics, right? It surprises a lot of people (including me) because he looks awkward out there sometimes, but he has a lot more range than he usually gets credit for.

Anyway, all the metrics I've seen rank Kielty lower than Murton as a left fielder.

If the metrics really do say that, I'd agree with them as far as Kielty vs. Murton goes. Murton's probably better, but not by a ton, and neither is a real candidate for CF.

I know he's decent but I don't know how he'd be in center.

I had a kid last year that played a great RF. My starting CF got hurt so I slid the RF over and he could not read the ball at all. I honestly thought he could handle it but things broke mechanically for some reason.

Maybe some of the reasons that Murton looks awkward at times is because he is more of a CFer than a LFer. I couldnt track the ball in the corners. I was much better at center. I have met people who kind of struggle with one or the other.

I dont think Murton is a bad LFer. He just made a couple of really bad looking plays. Its kind of like saying ARam is a bad 3rd baseman because of the one ball off his head. Overall I really think he was solid defensively.

I thought Murt did a nice job in LF, but he isn't particulalrly quick so I think he looks worse than many LFers when he has to go back for a ball.

I agree with whoever said he has better range than most people think or give him credit for. I think Murton has gotten his rep as bad defensively for looking awkward trying to catch balls that other leftfielders would have looked good on as they trotted over to pick the ball up off the ground. add to that a couple of misadventures in the well, where nobody but Billy Williams has mastered playing, and there you have an undeserved reputation as a bad defensive player.

Probably going to the Padres. :(
