If Wells has an '07 like his '06, he might get more than Soriano as a FA. He'd be foolish to sign an extension now.

That would only be a foolish move if he were guaranteed to have another year like last year. And he's not.

I tend to agree. Sometimes I sense an assumption that contracts will continue to increase each offseason, but that hasn't been the case historically.

If I were V Wells, I'd at least negotiate.

Wells certainly should negotiate. He's coming off a great season and IMO this is a bubble year for MLB salaries. I simply cannot believe that contracts like 5/50 for Gary Matthews jr. represent a sustainable market situation. I would advise ANY player who had a great 2006 to test this market ASAP.

I was shocked with the Mathews signing, I'll bet purse strings close real fast next year

I dont know if this possibility has been discussed yet, but apparently the Dodgers are still looking for another outfielder for some reason. They seem to value crappy outfielders over good young outfielders, so do you think they'd be dumb enough to trade Kemp for Jones? That Kemp fella seems like a sure fire great player and I would love to see him in CF for the next 10 years (if he can play CF).

Consensus seems to be he might be able to squeek out 1-2 years in CF, but he's gonna end up in RF.

And Hendry seems very happy with an outfield of the future of Soriano, Murton, and Pie.

I'd be happy with that outfield too, but Kemp seems to have much more patience and power than Pie. But if Pie pans out to be a pretty good player, Murton/Pie/Soriano seems pretty good.

If that's the case, then why would the Cubs be pursuing Drew? Or would that make Pie enticing trade bait?

Quite simply, we aren't anymore.

He was a fallback option to Soriano, and nothing more. We pursued him until we had our man, at which point we had no more use.

We may still grab a 4th OF like Floyd. We may sign Lugo to play a season in CF (and keep it warm for Pie) then to move to SS when Izturis's contract expires.

But we aren't gonna grab Drew or a guy like Manny unless the price is just too perfect to pass up.

The Cubs are more likely to trade OF Jacque Jones than Matt Murton, according to a baseball source.

Praise the Lord, HALLELUJAH! Now if only they can swing a trade with the Bucs for Ian Snell like I've been hoping for for the past 3 weeks......... yeah, right.
