That makes sense. I don't think I'd want to be the first starter signed unless it's a mega huge deal because it seems like the money getting tossed around is getting crazy and it depends on who sets the bar.

i dont think any starters will sign untill the red sox get a deal done w/ their import (i forgot his name, sorry).

 

i would imagine barry/ jason will command higher salaries than that, and the 2nd/3rd tier starters will want contracts equal to his.

 

if i'm right, this sucks because the dead line to bostons deadline to sign doesnt end till after the winter meetings. only thing to follow will be trade talks.

That sounds like a recycle of the same rumor supposedly coming from Kaplan on Wednesday or Tuesday. Which Bruce subsequently pooh-poohed.

The difference....the original post had it "closing in on a deal", and this one has it that it will be "official" on Monday. Not saying it will, BUT....could it be that maybe Hendry hasn't told Mr. Miles everything about what he plans to accomplished?

I saw that post today. If I am not mistaken it was posted around 10 am, and if I am not mistaken, that would mean it had to be Lou Manfredini making the announcement, not Kap.

yikes. $8M for cliff floyd? ill believe when i see it... so that would bring us to...what...$108M-$110M on the year? with still 2 starting pitchers needed. there are way too much ifs involved but IF floyd is signed for that price and IF the payroll can reach $125M, we're looking at $15M-$17M left for two starters minimum.

Well, if that rumor is true, it would only be a $3 mil base. If Floyd ends up making $8 mil, he'd obviously have a good year.

I do think Floyd wil end up a Cub, I just think the timing is "odd." I mean, the Cubs haven't even had an "oofficial press conference" (ie holding up his bring new Cubbis home unni) to introduce Alfonso Soriano. So why announce the signing of Floyd now? If Floyd wanted to be a Cub, wouldn't a deal be better off announce on Tuesday or Wednesday, which would allow Soriano his "moment in the sun" about his contract?

 

Again, I do think Floyd is going to end up with the Cubs, I just think if it happens, it will Tuedasy-Thursday time table, and not Monday.
