I have been laughing so hard reading these posts. Soriano not a good player? Soriano overrated?

he is a good player, but he's also overrated. he's being paid like one of the best players in baseball, and he clearly isn't.

How is he overrated? Please no stats involved. Your opinion.

And I agree with you that he doesn't deserve to get a $136 million dollar contract. But I will never consider him to be overrated.

So you agree that he is overrated?

Maybe overpaid, but that does that mean overrated? Who are these raters anyway?

The ones signing the paychecks?

The ones signing the paychecks pay him what they think he is worth. If he helps them meet their goals (e.g. - TV ratings, attendance, World Championship) then it doesn't matter how he rates compared to other players. He was the guy available that they felt could allow their team to accomplish those goals so they went out and got him instead of waiting for a .950 OPS guy to magically appear on the market.

i think jacque jones is better than albert pujols. prove me wrong...oh, and please no stats involved.

Pujols is the games best fastball hitter. He has great plate discipline, plays a solid D at 1B, gets on base, hits for power, hits for a high average, team player, and he runs the bases well. And he has a MVP award.

Qualifiers like "best" "great" "solid" "high" and "well" are just rudimentary stats... they're obviously a ranking relative to the rest of the league. And that MVP award is certainly a stat.

So basically your argument for Pujols over Jones without using stats is that he's a "team player."

I propose to you that Jacque Jones is on a team as well.

This debate is a draw.

Jones does all that better. Prove me wrong.

Plus, Jones bounces the ball into second base with the best of them.

But spending that kind of money has never been the Tribune Company’s style, nor the style of Andy MacPhail, whose resignation as the Cubs’ president and chief executive is effective today.

The timing of MacPhail’s departure and Soriano’s signing might be coincidental, but it’s hard to believe that MacPhail would have authorized the amount of money or number of years.

If this is true regarding MacPhail, he is a downright SOB in my book.

I think he just realized how crippling something like the Hampton contract can be and thanked his lucky stars that he turned down the cubs offer. I believe that caused him to be so risk adverse.

GMs don't pay more than they think a player is worth. If they don't think they're worth the money, they wouldn't pay it.

Isn't overrated when the rater thinks a player is more valuable then he actually is?

Seriously, this beats the crap out of the other most entertaining offseason threads that I can remember (Pierre, Neifi, Glendon). :D

That is no excuse. He is a black eye for the Cubs, even more than Sosa IMO.

Dont you guys watch ESPN? Jeter is the best player in baseball, this debate is meaningless.

I love this thread. I think I've posted more in this thread than I've posted outside of the Draft or Minor League boards before.

And personally, I'd like to encourage future participation on this level!

Who said Soriano is not a good player? I must have missed that.

Barrett is good, let's give him that 7/$100 contract that was suggested earlier

HAHAHA

I believe that was a TT post you are referring to and in that post he says (I'm quoting from memory) "Soriano is a good player getting paid like an elite player"

So taht was about the poorest post to quote if you are countering my claim that no one said said soriano is not a good player (although im not exactly sure thats what you are trying to do).

actually, I was supporting you.

I apologize. A couple of us have been fighting out of a corner for the entire day.

Also broke college student, but one who will have a job next semester and might be willing to pay up... maybe not...

EDIT- heh, now that I think about it, I will be making $6.50 an hour so I can sit at a computer for an hour pretending to work while I read NSBB and pay for premium.

Maybe if you gave me a free week and I would become hopelessly addicted... I guess we'll never know though.

Looks like he might have gotten a No-Trade

"We weren't going to spend the kind of money he ended up getting," Bowden told the Washington Post late Sunday night.

One source told the Post that the Cubs had granted Soriano one of his most significant wishes—a no-trade clause.

Per the trib.
