Count me in the I really wouldn't care if people stopped referring to a player's BABIP group.

 

Why would you actually want to know less about a player and his chances of future success? I just don't get it.

 

BABIP really doesn't tell me a lot about a player, and I don't see it as a great predictor of future success.

It's not used as a predictor of success as much as it's used to spot fluky seasons. I'm sure this has been mentioned in the thread before now.

Perhaps my wording could have been improved.

 

BABIP aids in spotting flukey seasons... knowing which seasons are indicitatve of a player's true level of skill and which are truly out of line with it aids in predicting future deviations from the most recent season (i.e. successes or failures)

That's exactly why it's useful.

I'm not arguing either side, I just find it to be a little redundant most of the time. A BABIP out of line with career norms often coincides with other statistics that are also similarly out of line. If you find that helpful, so be it.
