Now that the Cubs have locked up Ramirez and Lee with long term deals, what implications does this have for Scott Moore?

While for his own development, Moore would be best served playing at Iowa, I think he should spend 2007 on the Cubs bench. Even if he develops well at Iowa, that is the only place he has in his future with the Cubs. If he can maitain his patience and power while in a limited major league role, he could be a valuable lefthanded bat off the bench.

I know there will be some clamoring to have him get more PT in Iowa, but since his future with the Cubs will not be as a starter, I'd rather use him in Chicago right away.

Interesting. The risk is if he sucks in the majors the trade value on him goes down. But really what is his trade value now anyway or what would it be with a good year in AAA? The risk of having Pie play and flopping in MLB and have his trade value plummet is much greater than if Moore flops in MLB.

If he can learn to play LF, which shouldnt be problem with his speed and arm strength, he will improve his chances of being an asset on the Cubs bench. If he wasnt left handed id say forgot it, thats his golden ticket.

Vance, on an overall ranking, where does Scott look to rank among 3B prospects and/or 1B prospects? What are his projections (highend/likely/low end)?

If he projects well, and can significantly boost his trade value with FT play at Iowa, I'm not opposed to leaving him there and using him as a good piece in a trade for a mid-season hole in the lineup. Could we get a piece like a Maybin/Wood/other prospect for him? Or maybe fill a hole we find during the season (Jones? for expiring contract w/ extension) with him as a centerpiece?

If he develops at Iowa, he has a lot of value in a trade - which would help the Cubs a lot more than any bench role he has.

Maybe. But then again, if he gets to play now and again in the majors, and does well, his trade value will be even higher. I'd strongly consider him for a bench spot on the big club. The guys who are hurt by getting called up and sitting on the bench are generally inexperienced raw players who would benefit from the at bats in the minors. Moore has plenty of minor league time under his belt, 4 straight more or less full seasons, over 2000 plate appearances (more than double what Murton had).

I'm not sure Moore has much to gain in the minors. A season of 1000 OPS in AAA would probably increase his trade value, but I'm not sure there's much of a chance of it increasing without such an unlikely breakout season. At this point, the best thing he could do to increase his value might be to show he can handle major league pitching, as well as multiple major league positions. Piniella is talking about resting guys. Moore can get time at 1st and 3rd right away, and might be able to work in the OF, in addition to regular PH duty.

I suspect the Cubs will offer him in any proposed deal. However, I don't think they'll give him away as he's not blocked yet (AAA is open and he hasn't played there yet).

I'd have him begin 2007 at AAA. He is still young and has only 3? AAA at bats. I'd have him play both 1st base and 3rd base and would bring him up as a starter if either Lee or Ramirez is injured.

A second possibility would be to shift Moore to SS, 2B, LF, or RF. A good rotisserie option but perhaps not realistic.
