Actually, on this board, we will be discussing how much Hendry overpaid for some guy and a long contract to boot if the past is any guide.

So far he has under-paid every signing. Other big acquisitions will require big dollars, regardless of the team. The Cubs will overpay for somebody this offseason, but so will pretty much every other team looking to upgrade.

He didn't underpay for Rusch and Neifi

I just thought about something. This may have been mentioned somewhere already, but here's what I've noticed. The Tribune might sell the Cubs, they've put a huge emphasis on winning THIS year, a Cubs team with a WS victory would add several butt tons to their value.

Does anything think the Tribune might really spend whatever it takes to win this year? They could spend an extra 30 or so million and potentially add several hundred million to the Cubs value.

Yes. That has been my thinking all along.

I get the sarcasm, but the discussion is limited to this year, and this year, it hasn't happened yet. If it is going to happen, it likely will happen with a starting pitcher. And the only reason the perception will be that Hendry overpaid, is because fans are still in denial about the market for average starting pitchers.

I was hoping Lou would say we would sign eight midgets who walk all the time!

Every time I hear that quote I imagine 8 Neifis about to bat in the lineup.

mmmm, nope. No matter how small your strikezone, walking requires taking a pitch.

There's an article on Piniella at the winter meetings at Chicagosports.com. The headline makes it sound like he's going to keel over at some point this season:

Piniella ready for last ride

Hang in there, Lou!

Piniella was pushing for the Cubs to retain third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who agreed to a five-year, $75 million contract Sunday, the first day he was able to shop himself to other teams. The Los Angeles Angels were preparing to offer Ramirez an even bigger contract later that day, according to sources.

"Jim [Hendry] had said he was close, but we were also aware that after the 11th some other teams might jump in and have some fun," Piniella said. "I was really pleased when he called me and said we had a deal. You're talking about our cleanup hitter. Now with Derrek [Lee] in the 3 hole, Aramis in the 4 hole, that's something we can build around."

Piniella confirmed that the next piece in the puzzle would ideally be free-agent outfielder Alfonso Soriano. But signing him will be much more difficult, and expensive, than re-signing Ramirez. Soriano is expected to be pursued aggressively by many teams, including the Mets, Dodgers, Angels, Astros, Phillies and Red Sox.

"We have talked about Soriano," Piniella said. "I don't know exactly where that stands, but it's no secret we have talked about him. That's a complicated situation."

Well he is 63. Only Bobby Cox is older than Piniella of the NL Managers left after the departure of Alou, Robinson, and McKeon- who were ancient by any standards short of Julio Franco.

You knew that the peeps pushing for Joe would bring this up, just as surely as the peeps pushing for Lou would bring up the McCarthy/McGraw angle with Torre.
