Major League Baseball is flush with Cash.

And, what do the Pirates have to spend? About $10 to 12 Million in the offseason. The payroll stays the same in flush times? (FWIW, this does NOT include the $5 mil we're paying to Oakland to compensate the $13million singles hitter.)

Ouch.

It's a bit of a stretch to say we're Jason Schmidt and a heavy Lefty bat away from 83 wins. But, not that much of a stretch. (look at NL Central standings since All-Star game.)

Which could cost us about $25 million, more than double what's available. Which would bring our payroll into the mid $60 million range. Still, to be sure, close to the bottom of the league in terms of payroll.

The fans showed that we come out when we're winning. Look at how we showed up towards the end of the season, even with the team having been eliminated before federal taxes were due last year.

Assholes.

EDIT: I'll be the guy at Citizen Bank Ballpark with the sign that says "McClatchy Sucks!" when the Buccos are in town!

How much luxury cash do the Pirates get for 2007?

Hard to say exactly, but here's a picture of Kevin McClatchy....

Hard to say exactly, but here's a picture of G. Ogden Nutting.

ALthough McClatchy is the managing general partner, Nutting and his son Bob are the majority owners of the team now. They've bought up the shares of those other partners who've wanted to sell. McClathcy owns the same stake as when the group first bought the team.

The Nuttings are content to let McClatchey be the public face of the team. But, they're the ones who control the budget.

There was rampant speculation all year that McClatchey was going to be "Fired" this year as General Partner, replaced by Bob Nutting. We do know now that that was never the case.

Still, I wonder what would be if McClatchey controlled the money. I really don't know if it would be better. I do know it can't be worse.
