The whole Orton vs. Rex thing from last year is looking a little silly now with Grossman on pace to throw for 3700 yards and 30 touchdowns.

next year, however, i think orton will make griese unnecessary. does anyone know what the cap hit would be if we cut griese?

on second thought, a trade may be in order.

I think the cap hit would be the same with a trade or cut. Rex's cap number could be relatively low still, even if he resigns.

then i say cut him. the bears would have an adequate backup with 2 years of experience, some of it as a starter. a decent 3rd stringer could be found anywhere, including the later rounds of the draft.

Why wouldn't you trade and try to get something? I'd hold off on that decision until at least summer camp. Rex still has to get through the rest of this season. And I'm not convinced Orton will develop into a great backup yet.

I'd trade him -- might be able to get a 4th rounder. 4th rounders can turn out well, just look at Alex Brown.

by definition, backups aren't supposed to be "great".

cut him only if you can't get something of value in return. but it's likely that what you receive in return will be a burden on the cap as well. this will be especially vital if the bears decide that they need to franchise briggs to make a run at the superbowl next season.

i like the idea of franchising briggs, as harris won't be up for an extension until the following offseason.

A great backup and a great QB are not the same thing. Griese is a great backup. He's got starting on his resume, he's played well and won a lot. Orton needs to be much better before I'd rely on him for Rex's backup. Backups QB's are often traded for draft picks. And they are no more of a burden on the cap than they are an asset.

Orton isn't good.

You don't have to be good to be a backup.

You just have to not be bad and not make mistakes.

Especially with this team.

That's the rub. What's the point of having a backup QB who isn't capable of doing anything? I mean, the guy barely had a 50% completion percentage. Mind boggling considering he only had 5.1 yards per attempt. Orton was horrible last year and he was terrible this preseason.

he costs too much to be a great backup.

as far as orton, he's got starting on his resume and has won the majority of games he's started. he hasn't played particularly well, but he was starting as a rookie from game one and never got to use the shotgun, which he used on nearly every snap in college. what's better is that he is cheap and will be cheap for an extended period of time.

don't assume he hasn't learned a thing from 2 years in the NFL, either. i think he's the perfect backup.
