“That was just paperwork, just a formality,” Randa told me. “I’m retired. I pretty much made up my mind before last season started that it would be my last.”

Randa, 36, endured an injury-filled season with the Pirates, playing in just 89 games. It was enough to cement his decision to step away from the game.

“Actually, physically, I think I could play more,” Randa said. “But mentally, I know I’m ready to move on to the next stage of my life. With the mental part, there was kind of a grind to it. The hotels, the travel, it kind of wears you down.

“Plus, I was on a team with a lot of 24-year-olds and 25-year-olds. The truth is, I don’t have that much in common with them anymore.”

By retiring, Randa, who lives in Leawood, will be able to spend a lot more time with his family.

Let the Joe Randa for HOF debate begin...

Joe Randa had a solid career, .284 hitter with 123 HR. He also made $22,000,000. That might be the most sad part. His teams were a combined 835-1,076 in 12 seasons. He was only on one winning team, the 2003 KC Royals (83-79). How must that feel playing 12 seasons and finishing 4 games above .500 once?

I think he saw the writing on the wall when he couldn't even beat out John Grabow as the Pirates nominee for the Holiday Inn Look Again Player of the Year Award.
