the guy has been pretty useful, and would come cheaper than zito or schmidt, although not super cheap. i think he's owed like 10 mil for next year and the sox seem intent on making room for mccarthy.

how about jacque jones and dempster for freddy?

it gives the sox 2 things, a left fielder with a decent bat (i can't remember if he was a sox killer or not) and relief help. the salaries are a relative wash.

it makes sense to me.

His up and down velocity doesnt scare you? That could be a huge hint at a future shoulder injury. NO to sweaty Freddy.

Maybe because he pitched in the WBC and he had a dead arm for most of the year?

I'd take Freddy. He really heated up in September and he developed a splitter, I believe. One near perfect game and he flirted with a couple of no-no's as well that month. I'd take a chance on Freddy...he's be a good middle of the line rotation.

There are worse gambles than Garcia. Financially he may be troublesome, because I wouldn't want to count on him as the best SP acquisition(meaning still go after Daisuke/Schmidt/Zito), but he's due 10 million this year.

If the Cubs could get Garcia cheap (prospects wise) and only have to pay him 6-8M/year, that wouldn't be horrible.

I'd make that deal in a heartbeat. It would be a salary wash for 2007, and it would free the Cubs from $11M in committed contracts for 2008.

Ancillary benefits include being able to re-sign Wood for the bullpen, and forcing Hendry to get another OF.

Not everyone likes Jacque Jones. I think I've seen him in EVERY hypothetical trade proposal.

That being said, Garcia for EPatt or Murton?

Sure, you can have 1 error a game Eric Patterson. Murton is off limits.

how is Zito better then Garcia. Zito is WAY overrated

Zito is three years younger and has a career ERA nearly half a run lower than Garcia's. Garcia has a lower walk rate. That's about the only thing he's done better than Zito.

Don't you think EPatt can be salvaged at 2B? It seems worth the effort.

We usually think of more development time in the minors for offensive reasons. Maybe he needs to think of his defense more.

jones is a tradeable commodity, as his numbers for the season were pretty good and he's actually relatively affordable for his production level. he's just not enough of a bat that gets anything done for a struggling offense like the cubs. he's a good complementary bat for a ready-built contender, though. and a perfect fit for the sox in left.

like i said, jones fills a need in left field and is significantly more productive than podsednik. dempster also fills a need for the sox in the pen, plus it gives williams 2 players for the price of one, which is important in finding a way to upgrade a team that's in a serious salary bind for next year.

if i were GM and that deal was hung up, i'd throw in marmol, which would significantly upgrade the sox middle relief.

as for murton, the cubs can't really afford to trade one of their best young cheap hitters, as they are offense deprived in the first place.

additionally, the sox aren't going to find the next rickey henderson to put in left field. the best bet is to work hard with anderson and use him in the leadoff spot next year, while he's manning center. i really hope that kenny is deluded enough to pursue juan pierre but he's not like hendry, so you should feel secure in that.

Can he? Sure. Will he? I doubt it. Personally, I don't like his bat anywhere else as CF is Pie's, so if this defensive junk isn't worked out by the trade deadline, he needs to be gone.

It's the same crap that happened with supposedly "slick fielding SS" Ronny Cedeno. He has the range and soft hands, but something always seems to go wrong. Capable of the great play, but frequently botches the routine stuff.

You don't save runs with your glove doing that.
