With the addition of Bowen, does the payroll change?

Yes, but not significantly. We are paying all but 700k of Barrett's salary. The prorated portion of Bowen is about 200k, so it saved about 500k in payroll.

Okay. Now we have Kendall. What are the circumstances now.

How about now with Z's contract?

That doesn't change anything about this year, does it?

I meant with the table...just looking for an update as I've had to battle the "we can now add 30M in payroll this offseason" crowd.

I've been hearing Steve Stone on the score all year talking about the Cubs paying 400 Million or something like that. I know its backloaded contracts and what not. He always talks about that impairs the cubs from making any major moves. Can anyone explain what he is talking about for those like myself who don't know the dollars and cents behind what constantly is ranting about?

They are talking about the life of all the contracts that were signed prior to the start of the 2007 season.

Soriano

Aramis

Lilly

Marquis

Floyd

Zambrano

Piniella

DeRosa

Ward

Not sure if I'm forgetting anybody. Add them all up and it's over 400m.

Why is it a big deal? I don't know. The Yankees spend half that every season, and most of the big contracts stretch out over many years.

It's a big deal because it shows up on the organization's balance sheet as debt. This will directly affect the sale price of the team. If they are bad and immovable contracts which will necessitate even more spending to field a competitive team then that's yet another negative in the eyes of a potential buyer. As fans we should be concerned because it's going to take a new owner with very deep pockets to field a good team after 2008.

Lucky for us, it seems very realistic that anyone willing to shell out over 1 billion for the team really isn't going to have to worry too much about having money to put a competitive team on the field....and heck, with Jo-L Pinerio getting almost 14 mill for 2 years, some of those deals look like bargins. :D
