Boise Hawks

BOISE, Idaho -- Boise first baseman Russ Canzler won Minor League Baseball's Round-Tripper award. Canzler took the Short-Season honor on the strength of his 16 home runs this season. Salem-Keizer's Adam Witter also belted 16 homers, but Canzler was awarded the prize via the tiebreaker of most RBIs. Canzler had 61 to Witter's 52.

Canzler's 16 home runs set a new all-time record for the Boise organization. The old mark of 15 was held by current major-leaguer Todd Green (1993).

The home run record wasn't the only mark Canzler left on the Hawks' record book this season. He finished among the all-time leaders in a number of other categories including: 1st in slugging percentage (.543), 4th doubles (22), and 3rd sacrifice flies (five).

To all those minor league experts out there, how does Canzler project and what's his upside?

He's another power prospect out of the mold of Brian Dopirak and Ryan Harvey. He'll get lots of Ks and not much in the way of BBs. He plays 1B and is more athletic than Dopirak, from my understanding, given that the Cubs tried him out at 3B last season and that he had 11 steal attempts (7 successful) on the season.

In other words, he's going to have to make plenty of adjustments as he faces better and better pitching. He has a chance, but has a long way to go.

and he'll only be 21 for the 07 season so those numbers are big. I'd like to see him in right or left field though if he can handle it. I'm not convinced with our corner outfielders up and down the organization so it might be a good idea to get some more talent out there.

I guess he'll be starting in Daytona next spring? I'll have to get over there to see a couple games. Hopefully when Pawlek is pitching.

Nah, he and Pawelek should be starting in Peoria.

His defense is already sketchy, I don't know if he could handle the corner OF.

His defense is shaky at first, but he could potentially play the outfield.

I am waiting to see how well he handles the pitchers at the higher levels.
