So long as Lou hires a competent staff, whatever, lets just hear the news and get it over with.

I mean, is it too much to ask to want the best pitching coach and the best hitting coach?

I don't know about coaches...I think the real question is: Is it too much to ask to want the best pitchers and the best hitters?

I wouldn't be surprised to see Rothschild return as pitching coach under Piniella.

That's what's going to happen IMO. Who was Lou's hitting coach in Seattle?

Lee Elia has been his hitting coach for most of his stops. I think who would be his hitting coach is up in the air. Elia is likely going to stay in Baltimore with Polozzo. I think it's a given that McLaren would be the bench coach.

Whoops, just asked this in another thread. Is that the Cubs ex Lee Elia or have I made a mistake in how it's spelled?

Don't know if anyone heard this or not...but on Mike and Mike in the morning on ESPN Radio today, Jason Stark was on and said from what he's heard, Sweet Lou will be the next Cubs Manager. Take it for what its worth...if he's supportive of working the count and getting on base, I'm gonna call it an improvement.

Unless he "heard" that from Hendry (which has about 0% chance of being possible) I don't see how it could be reliable. Guys like Stark make these type of baseless comments knowing they have a 50/50 chance of being right then either crow about it when they are or just never bring it up again when they aren't.

And Mr. Rozner, is also making it sound the Piniella is the new Cub manager, the organization is waiting for the "RIGHT" time to make the announcement.

AKA after someone else hires Giardi?

If he wanted Girardi, the deal would be done. There seems to be a romantic notion that Girardi will hold out hoping for the Cubs job. If he does, he won't be managing. If Girardi gets an offer from the Nationals and he wants to manage, he should take it, because the phone isn't going to be ringing with a Cubs offer.

Either way, Girardi was never Hendry’s guy and no amount of talking was going to change that, especially with Hendry’s close ties to Florida management.

Girardi wasn't my guy, either, though I wouldn't be outraged if he had ended up with the job.

This quote, though ... infuriates me ... Good for Hendry that he has such close ties to Florida management. I guess he'll always have a job in baseball, and at least he had a team to root for after Game 6 in '03. I don't mind him choosing his guy. I do mind him having his Florida compadres tell him that he shouldn't hire the guy they fired after they hired a guy he was kinda sorta thinking about hiring.

What are we to think? He can't do his job without someone telling him what to do? He's like a submissive looking for just the right dominatrix. No amount of talking is going to change his perspective (yeah, that's just Rozner's take). Is Rozner's take reality?

Bochy is in the mix.

I gotta hand it to Hendry He sure is going through the list.

from what I read over at Gas light baseball (SD blog). They don't want Bochy to go. They like him. Does anyone know anything about him? I know zip on the man. It's seems from reading the threads in the SD blog Bochy is great on pitchers and catchers, but the knock is players don't have their best seasons with them. Players don't improve with him. Also, he's laid back.

With Piniella, Girardi and now Bochy. Whomever the Cubs pick will, at the very least, keep the Cubs nation talking this entire off-season.

Here's the Trib link re: Bochy as updated at 8:38 a.m. CT:

Highlight: Cubs' general manager Jim Hendry has met with all five managerial candidates on his original list, but his final choice may be "none of the above."

In what could be a fast-moving chain of events, San Diego Padres manager Bruce Bochy may be available and could become the Cubs' front-runner.

Agreed, Serena. It seems to me that Hendry did not give Girardi a chance to defend himself against the mudslinging compaign the Marlins put on him. And it seems to me that once Hendry talk the people in the Marlin organization, he seemed to have his decision already made regarding Girardi. It's a unfortunately turn of events, but really I'm not surprise. So I will give the Marlins their due, when then mudsling, they are the best at it. Girardi should be prasing the baseball gods that he is out of that situation.

Sounds like checking out background to me, just as most employers do.

Piniella also went on about how you get the best pitch to see in the AB by waiting instead of swinging away at the first pitch. He said the best baseball players can hit deep in counts. It kind of shocked me.

Maybe he wouldn't be so bad. He's not a stats guy, but it doesn't seem like he's Dusty Part II either.

All managers use stats, but obviously people think there are some special stat type managers, just curious, who are those managers?

And it also doesn't appear Joe is for certain the Nationals' choice.

Link.

Despite indications the Washington Nationals are zeroing in on Joe Girardi to be their next manager, baseball sources said the club is not close to hiring the fired Florida Marlins skipper.

With speculation rampant that the Chicago Cubs are on the verge of hiring Lou Piniella, Girardi (also a candidate for that job) would appear to have an inside track to the Nationals' job.

But sources with knowledge of the organization's search said last night the club remains far from naming a replacement for Frank Robinson.

Rangers will be interviewing Manny Acta on Friday. (MLB.com link). They'll be interviewing 5 total candidates: Washington, Acta, John Russell (Phillies' AAA manager), Trey Hillman and Don Wakamatsu.

MediaNews.com[/url]"]

Of the San Francisco Giants' central candidates to replace Felipe Alou, only Bruce Bochy has previous big league managerial experience.

But the Giants face a delicate and unusual timing issue as they explore going forward in talks with Bochy, who has a year remaining on his contract with the San Diego Padres.

According to a source close to the situation, Giants general manager Brian Sabean has contacted San Diego officials and was told he would be granted permission to speak with Bochy.

The Giants haven't made the official request, however, because they are unsure whether they could complete the process within the allotted seven-day time frame. And there are no assurances the Padres would agree to extend the window, especially since they have money to spend this winter and do not want to enter the free-agent period with their managerial situation in flux.

Giants bench coach Ron Wotus, Mets third base coach Manny Acta and Angels pitching coach Bud Black are the other confirmed candidates. According to a club source, each has a legitimate shot at the job.

The Giants view Mets bench coach Jerry Manuel and A's third base coach Ron Washington as names of interest, though club officials are guessing that Washington will replace Ken Macha in Oakland.

This article details the growing list of candidates for the Nationals job.

It also speculates that Girardi has an offer on the table, but he's waiting to see if he can become heir-apparent to Joe Torre after the 2007 season.

Girardi, according to sources, remains a strong candidate. But the list of potential managers on the three teams remaining in the playoffs -- Detroit, St. Louis and the New York Mets -- includes Mets coaches Manny Acta and Jerry Manuel as well as Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo.

Speculation throughout baseball has been that Girardi has an offer in hand but is weighing whether to wait for a chance to manage the New York Yankees in 2008 -- after current manager Joe Torre's contract expires -- but sources with knowledge of the situation insist Girardi doesn't yet have an offer from Washington

Baker seems to be pining for the job as well.

Several of the candidates previously identified haven't been kept abreast of the search's progress in recent days. Dusty Baker, the former Cubs manager who wants a new job for next year, spoke to Bowden earlier in the week. "But I haven't heard anything since," Baker said yesterday.
