Sources said the Cubs aren't concerned about losing out to another team if it comes down to a choice for their managerial preference. Hendry has said he hopes to have a decision by the end of October.

Why wouldn't "losing out" concern Hendry? If he knows who he wants go get him. Is he just going to wait and just take the last man standing?

Unless it's another Baker situation and he wants one of the guys in the playoffs.

No team is due to let go of any of the managers in the playoffs, and I haven't seen him mention any of the coaches that are in the playoffs...

I agree. The last thing we need is another crusty old Vet. who doesn't have patience for kids...

I don't put a lot of stock into any of these date deadlines. I think Hendry is just covering himself in case it would happen to take that long. If a candidate is interviewed and things go well I think you could see a hiring before the playoffs end.

I wonder if this means that Hendry has come to the belief that the manager doesn't really make that much difference.

It could be one of his first intelligent revelations. Now, if we could get him to recognize OBP.... :-k

If he felt that way he would've hired a manager already.

Hendry's friends with the Marlins org are bad mouthing Girardi and He believes them. But Hendry knows that a large portion of the fan base - as well as some of the beat writers- want Girardi. Perhaps Hendry is dragging his heels in the hopes that some other team will let him off the hook regarding Girardi.

I doubt it. As much as I have read on this message board about that debate I just can't agree with it.

I beleive the manager can and does make a difference. Certainly not as much as the players do, but they still have an impact.

I cannot understand this, Hendry needs to find out who he wants and should start interviewing the candidates, especially considering we need to find coaches under the manager too. I hope Hendry isn't a day late and a dollar short yet again.

He did promise to do an extensive search for a new manager, but assuming the speculation is true about Girardi, Piniella, and Brenly, he could at least start interviewing them. If he has someone else in mind that he has to wait for, so be it, but go ahead and start the interviews with the available candidates.

I'll say it again, Jim wants Bowa.

And that scares the bejeebus out of me! (BTW, did anyone hear Bowa's anti-Moneyball rant on Baseball This Morning XM 175 sometime during the 2005 season?)

Yeah Bowa is downright awful. Operating under the philosophy that 'the managers job is not screw things up', Larry Bowa is the anti-role model.

I have seen Mets third-base coach Manny Acta mentioned. I don't think that is why Hendry is dragging his feet but you never know.

That's a promise he should not keep. There's no reason why he'd need to to an extensive search. That's just a euphemism for "I have no idea what I'm doing."

And the Cubs will tell you, Hendry is just methodical.

Florida vs. Cubs.

Florida = Went after "their guy" (and a highly praised guy here at NSBB) in Freddie Gonzalez not 1 day after the reagular season.

Cubs = "Oh we "hope" to get it done in a month. .

===================================

Florida = has won 2 world series in the last 10 years

Cubs = 98 years since world series

DEDUCTION = Florida knows what they want, they get it, and the know how to "get it done". Cubs do not want anything, they do not hunger for a WSChampionship, and they do not know how to do anything. .

JUST #V^$!*$ GET GIRARDI FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE!!

I understand the gist of your post, but you have to realize that Florida has no fan base and no big-city media to deal with. If they took 2 hours or 2 years to hire a manager, would anyone care? If they hired Gonzalez or Showalter, would anyone care?

There were also rumors that Bruce Bochy may become available and the Cubs had been interested in him in the past.

Either Girardi or Brenly would be a good choice. And Jim would not face critisism because "on the whole". Cubs fans like both those guys. I'm not sure where pressure of a fan base comes in on this arguement. I simply stated Florida knew who they want, and went out and got a GOOD GUY in 1 days time. There is no excuse not to go ahead and sign either Brenely or Girardi. There is no excuse to take a MONTH to get your manager signed when there is so much more to do. It just shows this orginazation's lack of desire. It is important to go out and get a manager and get ramirez re-signed before the world series is even over. My point boils down to. I like the way Florida does it, and I wish the Cubs could show the same drive to go out and just "get it done".

I agree that either would be okay with me, but you know Chicago fans (and NSBB posters) and the media will analyze and criticize whichever move he makes for the next 2-3 years (unless the manager wins a WS).

This leads to another very good reason to roast Hendry that I don't think I've ever seen him criticized for...Indecisiveness. I can't recall him ever saying "I want that guy," and going out and wrapping him up as soon as possible. Whenever he has shown interest, he takes his time and usually ends up losing out.

Grow a set Jim, and learn how to make decisions! I could do a dissertation on bio-nuclear physics in less time than he takes researching free agents (not like's it's not known who generally will be on the market in the offseason before the offseason comes...). He needs to learn to have a game plan before the end of September. You don't wait until the season is over to start thinking about the offseason.

In that case (if he is going to get criticized no matter what), then why does it matter anyway? Are you saying hendry's "scared" of the result? If that's the case I want a new GM with a set of baseballs.
