One thing we could really use is a second baseman who could:

- hit at the top of the order and get on base at a good clip

- provide a little extra pop in the lineup

- hit from the left side to balance all the righties we'll be bringing back in the lineup.

Hey, Todd Walker's available.

Well yeah, I'm just trying to pimp Durham for 2B at every turn.

It's not his age, but his brittleness that bothers me.

Of course, I'm the one that wants to pry Drew away from the Dodgers and put him in CF.

If the Twins do not pick-up Castillo's $5.75 million option for 2007, then I would target him as the second best choice after Soriano.

But I've been after Castillo in a Cubs uniform for 4 years now.

Getting Castillo is a good choice if we can answer the lack of slugging somewhere else. If we trade for A. Jones, then signing Castillo makes a lot of sense. If we bring back Pierre, getting Castillo would likely not be a good move.

Agreed. If the Cubs are truly pursuing Soriano in CF as has been stated, then getting Castillo at 2nd is an excellent move. He's a quality lead-off man to satisfy both the old-school and the new new-school baseball fans, and we all know satisfying the fans is the name of the game ;).

I could easily see it, although I'm still holding out hope that this won't happen.

Trachsel would be a disaster. Floyd, I would hold out slim hope that he could give you a .273/.358/.505 line over 350 at bats, and that Murton would still get 500 between LF and RF.

But I think a big thing for Hendry when going after guys this winter will be durability. Trax and Floyd are both coming off injury marred seasons, and have had injuries in the past. I think he's going to go after a pitcher who at least pitched 200 innings this season or at least got very close, and/or has done it in the past. Trax was a consistent innings eater back in the day, but 4 of his past 6 seasons have ended well under 200 IP.

One good start in the postseason from Trax (already rehabbing his image by clinching the eastern division game) and a "clutch" homerun and Jim won't be able to stop himself.

Is there a stick my fingers in my ear and yell to pretend like I can't hear you smiley? I don't want to think about this.

We're ranked 11 out of 16 in SLG (10th in HR) and dead last in OBP in the NL. I don't think slugging is the most pressing problem.

You're right...they could sign Sheffield to a multi-year deal to play left after the Yankees let him walk. That is much more likely.

If I was Brian Cashman, I would pick up Gary Sheffield's $13M option, and then trade him for some prospects (even if I have to throw in some cash like ~$3-4M). Some team will take 1 year of Gary Sheffield for ~$9-10M (like the Astros, Angels or Dodgers).

In similar vain, if I was Kenny Williams, I would pick up Buehrle's $9.5M option, and then trade him for young players to a team in need of a starter, but feels they can contend in 2007 (St. Louis). If Kenny can get some salary relief by getting McCarthy in the rotation, he could use Buerhle's money and take another shot at Andruw Jones or Miguel Tejada.

It's still obviously a problem. 11th of 16 isn't good. And Castillo would do nothing to help it.
