NL Cy Young Award analysis

Wow, I'll remember not to send you guys the Welcome Package for Matt Cain's Fan Club. Sheesh, take it easy. I think his performance merits discussion, I didn't put him in my top 3 fer crying out loud.

 

Do note the kid is just 21 yo, he's a keeper.

 

I'm not doubting that Cain is a keeper. At 21 years old, he's immensely talented. That being said, he's not a true Cy Young contender.

The Cy Young discussion should boil down to Webb vs Carpenter vs Oswalt vs Arroyo. As much as I'd love for Zambrano to get serious consideration, he doesn't deserve it.

 

I'm not sure how you can discount Zambrano's chances -- he is 1 off the pace in wins (a stat that gets a lot of votes regardless of how anyone feels about it), 1st in strikeouts (despite missing 2 starts), and 6th in ERA.

 

A couple more outings like Sunday and I like Carlos' chances.

 

BTW -- has a pitcher ever won the Cy Young and Silver Slugger in the same year? I'd love to see the photo of Z holding up both trophies. :D

3. K's

4. ERA

5. Character/Intestinal Fortitude/I've heard of him

 

Young pitchers get it after a few years of excellence, kind of like a junior Mafia guy getting "made". Z has done enough that I could see the capos opening the books for him.
