this deal is awesome - it's way too much for a guy that has a pretty good chance of breaking down.

this I would call a high risk deal. I don't know that I would have signed him to that with the team the Astros have. Perhaps they think they can upgrade the offense significantly next year.

 

the Cubs should trade Zambrano.

I think it's the 5 yrs part of the deal that's the problem. A deal of 3/44 (comparable in average $/yr) wouldn't seem nearly as bad. If Houston would have signed him for four years and included a team option for the fifth year, that would have been better IMO.

Unfortunately, the economic reality of baseball is that Aces get 5 year deals. Not even aces per say; just guys with ace potential.

 

It's going to suck when Carpenter becomes a FA, because unlike Oswalt and Z; he is old. He'll get a long term deal from somebody, but he shouldn't get more than a 3 year deal. Hopefully he'll settle for a hometown discount. At least with Zambrano or Oswalt, you know they have a reasonably good chance of maintaining close to their current performance.

I would say that with Z, but not so much with Oswalt. Even Z! is a risk with how much he's getting worked by Dusty right now.
