Hendry is an idiot for not firing Dusty mid-season. It's pretty clear it would have been better that way for this organization, Dusty, and the fans.

 

I agree. If they would have fired him in June/July, you have time for a new manager to come in and establish himself for next year.

Not necessarily (if a new manager is going to be hired from another organization, that couldn't happen during the season). However, at least they would have had an interim manager who probably would have handled the pitching staff infinitely better than Dusty.

I wonder if Chris Speier's drunk driving incident had something to do with all of this.

 

Perhaps Hendry was willing to make that move....fire Baker and name Speier as the interim manager. However, since Speier had enough of a problem that he was forced to leave the team for awhile, that wasn't an option.

 

Maybe the organization was aware of Speier 's problem with the bottle, and couldn't/wouldn't commit to him mid-summer, when firing Baker was a real possibility.
