Step by step, part II: Derrek Lee could return to the lineup when the Cubs go to Pittsburgh for their next series if all goes well.

"He's pretty close, real close," Baker said of the Cubs first baseman, on the DL to nurse his right wrist. "He's swinging the bat good and doesn't feel any pain. It's a matter of him seeing some offspeed, breaking stuff. He'll probably be on fastballs, that's more a reactionary pitch."

Lee has been working in the cage every day and was "hitting balls on the moon" during his batting practice sessions at Wrigley Field, Baker said.

Great news, but too little too late. I would love to see D-Lee end the season on a good note.
I think that's the whole reason for bringing him back. Obviously he won't help win this year, but he can gain confidence that he's fully healed and back to his usual effectiveness heading into next year.

With all the yuppies renting the place out during the day, I don't think he has much of a choice.

Derrek Lee is (after Pujols) the second best position player in the NL. He's not some rookie that needs to gain confidence at the big league level. He knows what he is capable of.

Yes, but he is a player who has never had a significant injury before in his life. When you have that first huge injury, you still have doubts about if you will ever be exactly the same again. If he is healthy, then erasing that doubt in Lee's mind about exactly how much he can do will maybe mean that he won't have to test it at the start of next year, but rather can come into camp ready to have another big year.

I was kinda hoping we'd just shut Lee down. Just signed a huge contract, don't need this to get reinjured again or anything.

Agreed. Just take the next month and a week off and just let the wrist heal up without risking more injury to it. There really is no advantage, at least in my opinion, by bringing back Lee right now.
