A baseball source told MLB.com that the veteran outfielder was dealt along with cash considerations to the Mets on Tuesday in exchange for a Minor League player. Green, the source said, agreed to waive his no-trade clause and the deal is now in the hands of the Commissioner's office, which has to approve it because of the money involved.

Has the/any commissioneer ever denied a deal because of money?

Yes. Back in the 70s Bowie Kuhn voided the sale of a couple of the A's stars when Charlie Finley was gutting the team.

Solid pickup for the Mets.

I hope Arizona is eating part of the deal...otherwise I wouldn't

call picking up a guy with a 10+ mil contract who is slugging .429 a

"solid move"

If you can win a World Series, who cares.

It's funny that a good hitting team will keep working to improve its offense (Yankees, Mets), but Hendry can't lift a finger to do a thing for his pathetic offense that has been bad for 4 straight years.

Well, that and Mets\Yankees owners are willing to let their GM's spend whatever they want and need.

Victor Diaz was DFA'd to make room for Green.

I'd pick him up and drop Bynum or Pagan in a second. He was not good at all in the minors this year, but he put up nice numbers for the Mets last year and is still young enough to improve.

Diaz was ranked as the #5 prospect in the Mets system going into this year.

Whatever they want is a bit of stretch. The Mets owners, for one, have been beaten up in the press for cheaping out on more than one player. They also aren't that much higher than the Cubs, and were below the Cubs a couple years ago.

Agreed - Hendry ought to jump on him.

But as fat as Hendry is he might hurt him......

:D

Just kidding. I'd like to see Victor, the Cubs need a new hometown hero now that O'Malley is done.

Who? They got Beltran, Pedro, Delgado, Glavine, and now Green. I can't imagine a Mets fan saying the Mets are cheap?

FWIW, PECOTA projects Diaz at 20-HR, .340ish OBP and .500ish SLG for 2007-2010.

The Cubs have missed some opportunities to pick up guys for cheap this year - Ryan Church comes to mind.

Diaz would make sense. Even if there's concern over his 2006 numbers, we could at least platoon him with Jones in RF.

ARod comes to mind first.

The Mets have been barely ahead of the Cubs. If Cubs fans claim the Trib is cheap, don't you think Mets fans might claim their owners are cheap, given their much larger revenue base?

What of Rusch for Diaz? Looking at aquiring Diaz makes way too much sense for Hendry...
