Also relating to this year's draftees, Evan Longoria is in AA already after putting up a .424/.487/.879/1.366 line in the NYPL (Short season A), and a .327/.402/.618/1.020 line in the California league (High A). He doesn't turn 21 until October.

Longoria has been amazing. I don't think I've ever done such a quick 180 on a player in such a short period of time. I was pretty pissed that the Rays took Longoria over Lincecum or Miller, but with how easily he's cruised through 2 levels, I'm a believer. It'll be interesting to see how he does in his 3 week stint in Montgomery to finish this season. I wouldn't be surprised if he got some time in Tampa after the minor league season ends, similar to Rickie Weeks in '03.

an aside, but I haven't found another thread to ask this in. probably not the right forum, but oh well.

I watched just a little bit of the CWS, but was shocked and amazed at the numbers of NC's shortstop. why on earth did he not declare for the draft and how high will he go when he does?

I'm not a big expert on the draft so I can't really project where he'd go, but Horton(the UNC SS) didn't declare because he isn't old enough. He was a Sophomore this year, so if he wants he can enter next year if he wishes.

so once you enter college you have to stay until after your junior year?

Yes, although I believe it's different if you go to a JUCO.

Sophomores who are 21 or older (or within 45 days of 25) are eligible too. This is how Tim Lincecum was eligible last season too. Otherwise, you have to be a JUCO (any age) or a junior/senior in college.

I don't know if it's a wise idea to have Miller up in September, no matter how he does in the minors. It's definitely not a good idea to have him relieve in the minors now itself (whether or not he's a reliever this September). He'd do better to get all the innings he can get now.

I thought the rule was that any player 3 years removed from his high school graduation was eligible to enter the draft?

There are exceptions to it, as I mentioned (JUCOs and 21-year olds):

BA on How the MLB Draft Works[/url]"] • High school players, if they have graduated from high school and have not yet attended college or junior college;

• College players, from four-year colleges who have either completed their junior or senior years or are at least 21 years old. College players who have dropped out of school can apply for the draft by writing the commissioner's office no later than March 20;

• Junior college players, regardless of how many years of school they have completed, and

• Anyone who is 21 within 45 days of the draft date.

In other news, the Cardinals are absolutely loaded at 1B. Not only do they have Mr. MVP at first for like the next 10 years, but they recently promoted 2006 draftee Mark Hamilton (TUL) from State College (NYPL) to Quad Cities after hitting .264, 8 HR, 24 RBI in 30 games, leading the NYPL in HR. He was promoted, in part, because the Cards promoted 1B Randy Roth from Quad Cities to Palm Beach after Roth lead the Midwest League in HR (18 ) and hits (118).

Hamilton is hitting .360, 1 HR, 12 RBI in 12 games with Quad Cities, while Roth is hitting .389 with 5 2B and 5 RBI in 10 games for Palm Beach.

Huh, Andrew Miller is advised by the same group of agents (Frontline Athlete Management, with agents Darek Braunecker, Jim Lindell and Mark Rodgers) as Jeff Samardzija and Chris Huseby. I think they've done well this summer just with those three contracts.

Hamilton will have to repeat his dominance at Low A to be something, he turned 22 a week ago. Roth is a 23 year old that dominated Low A, not that high of an accomplishment.

Look I live in Prattville (about 10 minutes north of Montgomery) and I already seen this kid play, and boy.....I would't say the Biscuits were DESPARATE for offense (seeing as they were a solid offensive team) but getting Reid Brignac and Evan Longoria makes the Biscuits a tough team in AA. And I planned to watch a few more Biscuits games before the yr is out.

Oh yeah, both are pretty far away, but Pujols isn't going anywhere, so they don't need to rush either.

BTW, why is wolves capitalized in the thread title?

For the same reason "Plan" and "Throw" are capitalized?

I go by typical title rules for starting threads. The thread title almost always has all words starting with capitals save for stuff like "the", "and", "to" and so on.

Just a habit of mine.

My mom - a copy editor/journalist - approves. :thumright:

Man, I can't wait for the postseason so the Tigers can lose in 6 to either the Yankees or the Red Sox.

Why? I really like this team and think it would be awesome to have them in the World Series, considering their recent horrible stretch and the fact that their fans seem to be pretty on the level compared to other AL franchises.

I really like the Tigers, too. And it's almost....heck it is unfair. Think about a postential pitching staff that includes Bonderman/Maroth/Verlander and Miller, with Rodney and Zumaya at the back end of the bullpen. Omigod....unreal.

The Tigers have not shown that they can beat the Yankees or the Red Sox. And don't they also have a losing record against the White Sox? That's why I don't think they'll beat them in the postseason.

As for why I want that to happen: probably cause the Tigers swept us at Wrigley.

Tigers' records against said teams:

White Sox: 3-6

Red Sox: 1-2

Yankees: 1-4

They have three games left against the Yankees and three left against the Red Sox. They also have seven left with the White Sox.

If the Red Sox and Yankees make the playoffs, the Tigers won't have to worry about facing the White Sox. Finally, regular season records don't tend to tell the whole story. Let's check out some of the recent WS winners and their regular season records against the other playoff teams in their league:

Chicago White Sox Records in 2005:

AL East Division Champs NY Yankees: 3-3

AL Wild Card Boston Red Sox: 3-4

AL West Champs LAA Angels: 4-6

Boston Red Sox' Records in 2004:

AL East Division Champs NY Yankees: 11-8

AL Central Champs Minnesota Twins: 2-4

AL West Champs LAA Angels: 5-4

Marlins' Records in 2003:

AL East Division Champs Atlanta: 10-9

NL Wild Card SF Giants: 1-5

NL Central Champs Chicago Cubs: 2-4

I could go on doing this.

The bottom line is, the regular season does not make for good predictions when it comes to the postseason. All of a sudden, those crappy 4th and 5th starters can go flying out the door. Taking three out of five from a team in the regular season doesn't sound like much, but it'll be enough to advance from the first round. Ditto taking four out of seven when it comes to making it to the World Series and winning one.

Posted

Perhaps a better stat would be the #1, #2, and #3 Tiger starters records against the Red Sox/Yankees/White Sox.

But wouldn't it have been awesome if the Cubs took 2 of 3 from the Tigers at Wrigley? It would lend even more credence to the theory that the Cubs play up to their opponents level, and could always be mentioned when talking about the Tigers.
