For anyone that is interested... BBTN will be having a trade rumors show at 10 ET/9 CT tonight and tomorrow night. Probably not much as far as Cubs, but I'll still watch.

Stark just said the Dogers and Rangers look to be jumping right in on the Tejada sweepstakes.

Guess the Rangers new strategy is to score 20 runs a game to win games. Could you imagine if they added Tejada to that lineup?

If Stark is right and the Rangers were to acquire Tejada then that would be a major coup.

That mentioned Tejada to the Dodgers. Would they have him play third if it was to happen? I like the fact they mentioned Izturis to the Orioles in this rumor. Keep him away from the Cubs. But, then again it seems the Cubs like to trade with Baltimore. So he would eventually become a Cub.

If Koronka is part of your starting rotation, then you'll need to score 20 runs a game.

Steve Phillips just said the market for Maddux isn't very good. He said the both the Padres and the Dodgers have backed off their interest in him, and the Mets haven't really had that much interest in him to begin with.

Maddux's best value right now is mentoring Marshall, Marmol, and Hill.

Then he should retire and take Rothschild place as pitching coach. Keeping him just means that he's taking another person's place (Guzman) in the rotation. This year means nothing and Maddux should not be re-signed in the offseason. We need to know what we have in Marmol, Marshall, Hill, and Guzman. It's pointless to keep Maddux at this point.

But, dude, how can Dusty maintian the integrity of playoff races w/o Maddux??

If the Rangers were to include Kinsler in a deal for Tejada they could move Young back to second and put Tejada at short. That would be one potent offense. They may not be able to pitch, but they would club a lot of teams to death.

You wouldn't need to pitch with that lineup.

That joke was never funny.

I know, Dusty wasn't laughing when he said it either....but he was being serious (in his mind atleast).

I realize Dusty made a comment, but somebody continues to throw it out as though it's supposed to be funny.

The comment isn't funny, but it's so stupid that it almost makes is funny.

From a serious perspective, because this does actually involve trading Maddux...

I wonder if Hendry looks at a post-trading-Maddux rotation and sees

Zambrano

Prior (assuming he stays in the rotation)

Marshall (assuming he returns from the DL and stays in the rotation)

Marmol

Hill

Guzman (who is having issues with pitch counts in AAA, and -- though I'd love to say "pitch him the majors" I wonder if it might be better in the long run to at least let him get maybe 2 solid starts under the belt in AAA before promoting him)

...uh, Ryu? Jerome Williams? Rusch, though someone has to be a mopup pitcher and Novoa can't pitch 2 innings every single day ...

and Hendry realizes that no one other than Z can be counted on to get to, much less past, the 5th inning on a consistent basis. Hopefully Prior will solidify his spot in his next couple of starts.

Hendry may be reluctant to trade Maddux because the pitching rotation that's left could be a MASH unit. I don't see Maddux stealing starts from the minor leaguers; there have been starts-a-plenty given Wood's and Prior's health situations.

I do see Hendry wanting to avoid 100 losses and thinking that, even though Maddux hasn't been pitching well, he does actually pitch every 5th day, and only he and Z are guaranteed to do so.

I'm a Maddux fan, and I think he should be dealt. I would love it if he came back next year AS a pitching coach (or heck, even as manager). But I do see Hendry's concern over what would be left in terms of a pitching staff as impacting any potential deal.

Hendry wants to keep his job and I suspect he wants to keep Dusty's job. (part of the reason both should have gotten the heave-ho, oh well).

I hope Hendry already sees Maddux as being one that can't be counted on to get past the 5th. I like Maddux as much as the next guy, and I'd like to see him go out as a Cub. However, I'd also like to see him not being so bad.

But compared to the rest of the rotation?

All I heard after today's game was Dusty saying that he sure hoped Maddux would go deep into the game tomorrow. I agree that Maddux shouldn't be going deep into games anymore (and there was some talk of this in the game threads). He's not effective.

It's part of the reason I think he should be dealt.

But the fact that the rest of the rotation is not a lock to pitch many innings increases the temptation to extend Zambrano especially (since he is El Toro and indestructible) and Maddux (since -- especially compared to Z -- it seems like he's not pitching much at all).

I'd love it if they went to a 6-man (even if they juggled it so Z would get every 5th start) after trading Maddux.

I'm just saying that I won't be surprised if Hendry chooses not to trade Maddux.

ETA: to be clear ... I think Maddux SHOULD be dealt and I'd like to see the Cubs go with a youth movement, though I'm also realistic in that I think it will be ugly to see at times.

I'm just saying that I keep picking up hints of Hendry being reluctant to deal Maddux unless there's a good return. Maybe that's just posturing. Maybe that's job protection in his mind. But I think he might be serious when he says that.

I won't be surprised if Hendry does the opposite of the best decisions for the Cubs long term future.

He and Dusty are very much alike in that way -- they are loyal to individuals above the team.

I think it is the college coach in him that way. He really hit Creightons players hard when he was running the draft, (IE: his old players), and now ND because he and the coach there are long time friends.

I believe that he and Dusty are underdog fans at heart. That is why we have so many underdogs and "gritty" players on this roster. They so desperately want the underdog to win that they are shooting themselves in the foot by not getting the core that the underdogs compliment.

When did they change their strategy? I never thought of the Rangers as a pitching team.
