IT'S BECAUSE IT'S ART, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS PLAYING POORLY IF PEOPLE APPRECIATE IT

I haven't heard a lot of the White Stripes stuff, but I think they sound pretty good from the stuff I know. It's all subjective.

Dusty appreciates Neifi's play, so he must not play baseball poorly.

Weak argument.

Baseball has boundaries, rules, winners, losers. Therefore there has to be a correct way to do it. Art has no such limitations, it's value is not in winning, only in it's perception, which is completely up to the person who is exposed to it.

Terrible analogy.

I have to side with TT on this one. Music is one of the few things (movies are another) where it's quite simply impossible to find a certain example that everybody likes. Someone, somewhere, is going to hate every example, even if it's the Beatles or something equally impressive. In baseball, we can all look at Nomar's 2006 season and say "He is having a really friggin good year". But not everyone will look at (to pull out a current example) American Idiot and think it is a good album. Many might but not everyone will.

Aerosmith has only ever written one good song, and it was their first single.

That being said, they get the vote over the White Stripes. The White Stripes have made their careers on being bad at their instruments. My 6 year old nephew can drum circles around Meg White, and anyone who's taken 6 months of guitar lessons can play less sloppily than Jack White (on the WS recordings). They're an absolute joke.

You clearly miss the point of the White Stripes

To play poorly and make millions?

I'd like to see any 6 month vet of the guitar play Ball and a Biscuit. Jack White's minimilistic style is just ironic because he's actually a fantastic Blues and Rock guitarist.

Exactly. The point is they sound like anyone who plugs in in the garage and cranks it to 11. You call it "sloppy", I call it "not processed through ProTools 173 times before going on the CD"

Trust me, I'm as big a critic on over-produced crap as anybody, but the White Stripes just play POORLY. There's no other word for it.

Here's an analogy - the White Stripes are the Neifi Perez of music. They don't play at a professional level, yet are rewarded with millions of dollars for that mediocrity.

that's not a bass line on seven nation army.

it's a guitar, but played a few octaves down, right?

I disagree. I think Jack White is a great guitar player.

me too. i would consider jack white a great musician, period. he can play several intruments well.

You can say that there's art in it, but there are people who claim defecating in a jar is art too. It's all about perception.

From a technical, musically solid standpoint their music is not executed well. The drums and guitar constantly phase and fall out of time with one another. It sounds sloppy because it is. Whether or not you appreciate the art behind it is a moot point - I'm simply pointing out they play poorly, regardless of who likes it.

i'm sorry, you must not understand art. it's a style of playing, that they do on purpose. it's called minimalism. de stilj? yeah, that's an art form, not just the name of one of their albums. very few musicians could make as complete albums as the white stripes do with the amount of instruments they use and the technology they employ. elephant was recorded completely without the use of computers. give me ONE other band on a major label that sells those types of units in the last 20 years that's done that. the drumming is on PURPOSE. i don't get people that can't wrap their heads around that.

I know that it's done on purpose. My point isn't that they're not good musicians, only that they play VERY poorly, and make money off it. Their whole gimmick is not playing well. You can call it minimalism or art if you want to, but it's still lack of effort/talent shown that sets them apart from other acts. I've got my head wrapped around that they play poorly on purpose, but that's what upsets me. They don't play well and people love that about them, how does that make sense? They're duping their fans into shelling out big bucks to pay for their sloppily thrown together tracks in the name of art.

i don't feel duped. i enjoy their records alot.

name some particular songs that are so poorly played if you would please. it's like derwood said earlier, it sounds different than other bands because it's not processed a million times in pro tools. other musicians are syncing up the beat and whatnot, they just play... the drummer from pink floyd was often not right on syncopation, specifically on dark side, does that make him a poor drummer? if you aren't programming an 808 or an MPC, it's never going to be perfectly on time, at least for live recordings.

edit: i don't think the art is moot at all. if music wasn't artistic, it would all be britney spears, and i think we can both agree that wouldn't be a good look.

I agree with ManCrushonNomar. The Stripes have some decent tunes when your in the mood for that sort of thing, but their not talented musicians.

I also dont think they should be ranked this high when bands like IM, Megadeth, CCR, ect are ranked lower.

As I've said before, I'm well aware of what recording without the use of digital manipulation sounds like. I come from a big punk rock background where most of the music was recorded without the use of any digital editing, but these bands still sound tight as a cohesive unit. Not only that, but seeing many bands that play together very well live sound better as a band than the White Stripes on their recordings. I'm not trying to say that they're horrible musicians, only that they do in fact play poorly on purpose. That's their gimmick.

Well, it certainly wouldn't LOOK all that bad.

it's futile trying to change someone's opinion about music, so MCON can just believe what he wants. I think White Stripes are great and their last album is amazingly diverse
