i'm going to the next two boise games this weekend. anybody else gonna be there, and does anybody want me to watch for anything in particular?
Posted

You'll probably see Pina and Muldowney/Pawelek starting the two games Saturday and Sunday. Anything you can report on Pawelek and Muldowney would be most welcome; especially Pawelek and Pina. My knowledge is really limited on Pina, so anything you can report on his build, stuff, and so on would be most welcome.

In terms of hitters, there are a number of guys who could be interesting to watch. Controversial draft pick OF Tyler Colvin will be present. I'd like to see what you think about his approach at the plate, speed, routes to flyballs, etc. SS Sammy Baez was rated as the best defensive SS in the AZL by BA last season; his bat has been coming around slowly as he fills out. I know 1B Russ Canzler has great power, but I'm curious as to his speed/athleticism/defense. RF Alfred Joseph has been making an impact with his bat and his arm. OF DJ Lewis is a favorite on the board.

Yakima is the Diamondbacks affiliate. OF Cyle Hankerd was their second third rounder in 2006 and is currently one of the better hitters in the NWL. Cesar Valdez and Shane Dove appear to be their two best pitchers.

Outshined mentioned most of the hitters of intrigue (Baez, Canzler, Colvin, Joseph and Lewis). The starting pitchers will indeed be Pina and Muldowney tag teaming with Pawelek. Also, if LHP reliever Jeremy Papelbon comes in either day, anything on him would be great. If you could get velocity readings for any of the pitchers, that'd be awesome.

Probable Starters:

Iowa: RHP Angel Guzman (2-4, 4.03 ERA, 44.2 IP, 51/13, 1.21 WHIP) vs. RHP Ryan Baerlocher (3-3, 3.95 ERA)

West Tenn: RHP Sean Gallagher (3-1, 3.18 ERA, 22.2 IP, 19/15, 1.63 WHIP) vs. LHP Camilo Vazquez (AA debut)

Daytona: RHP Roberto Sotolongo (0-1, 2.40 ERA, 15 IP, 11/2, 0.80 WHIP)

Peoria: LHP Jesus Yepez (4-4, 3.33 ERA, 81 IP, 43/42, 1.38 WHIP) @

LHP Alexander Smit (2-2, 4.60 ERA)

Boise: RHP Jose Pina (1-1, 1.80 ERA, 15 IP, 5/2, 0.93 WHIP)

Mesa: RHP Alberto Albequerque (0-0, 4.50 ERA, 4 IP, 5/5, 2.00 WHIP)

I'd also like a report, velocity included if possible, on Pina. We know that Pawelek is a wild lefty, we know that Muldowny is efficient but doesn't throw very hard. But Pna has been getting promoted, and has shown improvement early. Does he look like he's got big-league arm, and project to get better? Or just a guy with an ordinary fastball that NWL-hitters just tend to ground out on?

Of the hitters, Joseph, Baez, Lansford, and Colvin are the four I'd be interested in hearing about. Joseph has done pretty well; does he look like he's got any promise? Colvin has been awful thus far; does he look that bad at the plate when you see him? Getting killed by breaking balls? Or what?

Enjoy the games, and thanks in advance.

Mesa's currently losing (again, sadly) 5-2 in the 8th. Drew Rundle got the start in CF and is currently 0/2, with a walk and a K.

Good news that he started in CF since there were some concerns about his ability to play there. Rundle had an RBI line drive single to LF in the 8th.

Mesa down 5-3 in the 9th with 2 outs, but the go-ahead run is at the plate.

1-2-3 top of the 1st with 2Ks for Gallagher.

The broadcast sounds great, Ron! *Much Much Better* than the last time I tried to tune in. I should probably email again and thank them for fixing it.

Iowa up 4-0 in the top of the 3rd.

West Tenn and Chattanooga are scoreless in the 2nd. Gallagher: 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 3/2.

Gallagher lives dangerously in the 2nd, giving up a single and two walks to load the bases with one out. But he escapes with a K and a groundout.

2 on, nobody out for the DJaxx in the bottom half of the second ...

Fox Ks on 3 pitches ... (doesn't like the 3rd call) ...

Rojas grounds to 1B - Asadoorian throws to 2B, but the throw hits Brandon Sing in the back as he runs to 2B - throwing error on Asadoorian - Gallagher up with the bases loaded and one out ...

Gallagher with an RBI Sac Fly! 1-0 DJaxx! Sing advances to 3rd.

DJaxx are 38-6 when they score first.

3-RUN HR FOR CHRIS WALKER!!! 4-0 DJaxx!

Ron has knighted Gallagher's curveball -- it's now known as Lord Charles.

And Gallagher Ks the side.

Guzman gives up 3 more in the 4th on 2 singles and 2 doubles.
Maybe it's time to make Guzman a closer candidate.

Because of a poor performance by a guy who has thrown approximately 50 pitches in the 21 or 22 days before this game?

One outing determines a career? Especially as Angel's building his arm strength after not being used by Dusty for 2 weeks?
