Bruce Miles"]The only coach who looks safe at this point is pitching coach Larry Rothschild, who turned down a multiyear offer from the Detroit Tigers last winter to stay with the Cubs.

Suntimes"]Pitching coach Larry Rothschild isn't in jeopardy of being replaced, nor is third-base coach Chris Speier, but if Baker is fired, some of the coaches he brought in are likely to go out the door with him.

Why? What has this guy done since he's been here? Why is his job safe? Makes no sense. Anyone else get the feeling that Hendry is just going to fire Clines and Sarge and that's it? :x

I have no idea what he's going to do.

The only justification I can think of is that Larry disagrees with many of the decisions Baker has made to overrule him. But Larry has done absolutely nothing in his time here. The Cubs seem to be more interest in stability than actual performance, which sounds a lot like their strategy in dealing with players.

Rothschild only has a 1 year deal, right?

My guess is that Hendry will go with an interim coach, so they'll go with stability for the year in the pitching coach area, and then let the new permanent manager hire his own guy in the offseason...

But that's just a baseless theory on my part.

Maybe, but they didn't even let Baker hire his own PC, and they bent over backwards in every way to get Dusty on board.

Was Rothschild on board before Baker?? I didn't remember that...

Maybe the dissention theory has some legs. Maybe someone else caught this too and can confirm, but when Dempster started off the 9th struggling last night, the camera showed Rothschild in the dugout looking at Dusty, and it appeared as though the said "what are you going to do?".

Ugh...what if he plans to use Rothschild as interim manager?

So long as it's interim, who cares.

I guess I just don't really see it as much of a change from Dusty.

The thing is, I'm not sure how having disagreements with Baker would keep Rothschild from doing things like helping to improve the control of our pitchers or trying to get our starting pitchers to become more economical, though. I'm sure Baker isn't telling Rothschild to make sure every young pitcher coming up from the farm system remains a wild man or that everybody on our staff should be turned into home run derby pitchers.

Rothschild really needs to go with the rest of them.

"Hey, Dusty, Big Z is up to 130 pitches. Should we do something?"

"Dusty?"

"Hellooooo?"

"Oh, right, he was canned."

..........

"Well, he can throw 140. But maybe I'll start to get the 'pen up just in case."

Yeah, well I'm reaching. I don't think he's earned the praise he's received or the job security he apparantly enjoys.

Maybe Hendry feels guilty about keeping him from the Detroit job and wants to make up for it by giving him another managers job.

JR only posts 1 time a month. So you won't have to worry about "confusing" them, too often. . .
