Anyone notice that Felix "The Franchise" Pie is hitting .248 in Iowa?

(And am I the only one livid that the Cubs actived Rusch off the DL and sent Guzman packing? I really thought that Guzman was getting it together, and that the Angels and D-Backs proved that sometimes you NEED TO DFA A PLAYER no matter what he's making...)

Guzman to AAA is the correct call here. He needs innings, which he was not getting here.

I wonder if Baker is fired if Guzman will go back up. Hendry can't tell him to pitch him and it was Bakers choice not to pitch him.

.248? Ouch. Pagan hit better than that in AAA. How are his other numbers this year?

.248/.314/.390/.705 with 7 homeruns and 38 rbi's on the season.

It's kind of interesting evaluating Pie when you look at his peripherals:

IsoP

2006: .142

2005: .250

2004: .144

2003: .103

IsoD

2006: .066

2005: .045

2004: .061

2003: .061

He's drawing more walks overall and he's back to his power levels in 2004. Given the fact that most people who have been watching him have said that he's been more passive at the plate this season (watching more strike three pitches, for example), I'm guessing these numbers are a result of trying to implement that new approach. His abnormally high K numbers seem to be indicative of that.

I wouldn't worry too much about his average, to be truthful. There are too many factors at play when it comes to determining that particular number. A week-long hot streak would get that number back to a respectable level, you know?

His power numbers and plate discipline require monitoring, but I think his slight improvement in patience is reason for optimism.

Bottom line: Don't throw him under the bus yet.

Maybe he shouldn't be in AAA. There was never much to gain in rushing him the way Hendry wanted to rush him (the majors last year, how stupid that looks now). He didn't even play half a season in AA, missing out on a ton of developmental time.

Didn't he do really well in 2005 in AA?

He did, but he only played for half a season because of that ankle injury. Have to figure that half-a-season off isn't going to help his development. Might have been a better idea just leaving him in AA this year and moving him up if he was doing well.

With the way Pie is struggling, the decision on Pie immediate future, has been taken away from Hendry/Baker. Pie staying in AAA for the next yr and a half is a very good idea, and I hope the new regime don't disturb that plan.

But this is the slippery slope. Who plays CF for 2007? Would this force Hendry to sign Pierre to an extension? Would Hendry be comfortable with Pagan in CF for a year?

I think you trade Pierre and then bring up Negron to see what he can do the rest of the year. He's been killing the ball at AA.

Unfortunately the upcoming Pierre extension is part of that.

If Hendry came through and did his job and signed Carlos Lee for LF and traded for Abreu in RF, I'd have no problem with Pagan taking up the bulk of time in CF. He's got the speed and his offensive numbers are a much better fit there than in either corners.

Heck, since we're stuck with him, why not just shift Jock to CF considering he supposedly has the speed and athleticism to play there?

Calling up Negron is a really iffy proposition. I'd rather wait and see if this is a fluke performance by him or if his terrible walk rate catches up to him at higher levels.
