im all for giving him a shot at cf along with pagan after they trade juan. hopefully the new manager will be able to put murton back on course too. the baker regim is already responsible for cp and i hope that murton doesnt get added to the list.

Here's something I've been wondering lately.

The Cubs have gradually acquired a whole slew of OFs that were at one time or another viewed as high-end prospects...

Pagan

Negron

Montanez

Jackson

Pie

Add to that guys like...

Fuld

Coats

Sing

And of course, Matt Murton.

What are the chances that the Cubs can piece together a complete OF from this collection (plus Jacques as a platoon partner for one of them), for '07 and beyond? A whole OF of youngsters would be extremely risky, but extremely cheap, too... leaving a ton of $$$ to spend in other places.

They could choose to go that route, but it would be a horrible decision. I'm not sure what qualifies some of those guys as having been high-end prospects, but an OF constructed of that group would be horrible in 2007. The Cubs need real OFers next season, no more futzing around with 4th and 5th OFers slated for lots of playing time.

if a guy is hitting almost .400 in the minors, but can't get his slugging percentage over .600, well, he better be a middle infielder or a centerfielder or something before anyone cares.

He's only been doing this for a month or so, though. In a month with New Hampshire (AA) earlier this year, he hit .215/.266/.300. For his career coming into this season, he was hitting .259/.320/.360. He's not old for AA, but he will turn 24 next month. He's repeating AA and put up a .691 OPS in 489 ABs least year.

He needs more than a month to show that he's living up to his draft spot.

He also sounds very similar to Pagan. Throughout their careers, neither has shown much power, they don't walk enough, they strike out a ton, and they don't steal effectively despite being fast.

Heh, sounds like Colvin (outside of the being fast bit).

In other words, ideal Cubs. :D

I would say quintessential, instead of ideal, but that's just me.

That is what I meant. I meant they'd fit in perfectly with the Cubs as they are, not as they should be.
