As i'm currently watching Prior pitch vs the Twins and watched the An Reyes start on Thurs a couple ironies coime to mind...

1) Drafting Mauer (current MLB batting leader and a catcher to boot!) over Prior was an argument used for contraction when all that nonsense was being talked about how small market teams did have the $ to compete as the Twins couldn't afford to pay Prior's bonus.

2) An Reyes started Thur vs the Sox (1 hitter CG) and while at USC was thought to have better stuff but fell in the draft below Prior b/c everyone had reservations of An Reyes staying healthy.

Just a couple fun facts!

Now with that being said and having had to personally witness last Sunday's abomination called "Mark Prior's Return!" i will say Prior looks much better.

If the Twins draft Prior, they don't trade AJ. And w/o trading AJ, they don't get Boonser, Liriano, or Nathan. I think they made the right chioce.

I'm pretty sure they skipped Prior because a) they didnt want to pay the 10 million dollar signing bonus and b) Joe Mauer was the golden boy from St. Paul.

If this were an alternate universe, Prior would be on the way to his 3rd Cy Young, and his second straight 300k season. But we have Dusty and Larry and Jimmy.

Well you have to admit they made the right choice, b/c they basically got 4 players: Mauer, Boonser, Liriano, and Nathan

I don't recall Reyes being said to have better stuff at USC unless it was much earlier. The injury part is true and definitely ironic, at least for today. Actually, watching Reyes pitch he looks to be almost a clone of Prior - from sideburns to stirrup pants to mechanics to repertoire.

the best evaluations of reyes mentioned that he showed "flashes of brilliance" that looked like teammate mark prior (at best). i don't remember any evals saying that he had better stuff.

You are spot on with the reason on why Mauer was picked over Prior. It was the combination of both rather than one more than the other.

They still had to pony up a very good deal for Mauer to sign with them. Remember Joe Mauer had a FOOTBALL SCHLARSHIP to be the QB for Bobby at Florida St. So they still had to convince Joe to sign. Wasn't necessarily hard, but still necessarily.

It wasn't anywhere near the amount of money it would have taken to sign Prior though.
