Adults don't respond to every percieved sling and arrow with a steady stream of vulgarities.

Bingo.

The way to handle someone like Marriotti is to ignore him, or to respond with a simple "He has a right to his opinion.", or simply state "I think he is wrong, but he has a right to his opinion, uninformed as it may be."

Guillen's response was trashy and offensive - its never okay to make the sort of reference he did.

And those of you who defend Marriotti's characterization of Baker as the "Rev. Johnnie B." are ignoring the inherent racial implications of that statement, IMO.

This thread should be titled "Ozzie Guillen has his panties in a bunch...AGAIN"

It could also be called....."Cub fans have their panties in a bunch" because World Series Manager for the hated White Sox tells it like it is about blowhard reporter.

Nothing Ozzie said there offends me....he happens to be right.

And his team won the World Series last year. And just annihilated the Cardinals. A couple of things that Cubs havent been able to figure out how to do.

We can go back to crying about WoPriDust now.

Doesn't Wilbon also call Dusty the Rev. Johnnie B? I'm probably mistaken, but I think I've heard him call him that once or twice before. Maybe I'm mixing the times I've caught the tail end of Around the Horn with PTI, since I usually only watch PTI.

The inevitable Ozzie Guillen meltdown when things turn sour on the south side is going to be fantastic. I wish I were a member of the media so I could have a front row seat to watch the fireworks.

One other thing, does it concern anyone else that Jay Mariotti is the mouth piece of all things Chicago sports to the nation? I think he is a blowhard and feel that the garbage he spews on Around the Horn just gives the nation a bad projection of what sports fans in Chicago are like.

It wouldn't be appropriate if you said what Ozzie said, either. Just because it's the same way that you would handle the situation doesn't mean it's the right way.

He's an idiot for saying what he said....... and it's am embarrassment to himself and his team. It's pretty much a black & white issue.

Inappropriate would be torching Mariotti's car, verbally berating his children and kicking his dog.

Inappropriate also was Ozzie's behavior during the Texas game when Sean Tracy wouldn't bean Blalock.

If Mariotti had positioned his argument in such a way that didn't inflame emotion, Ozzie's response would have been completely out of line. However, I stand behind the fact that it is reasonable to get angry if someone attacks you personally and mouth off. You just need to use appropriate words that go beyond being extremely irritated.

Do you have to give up your seat for viewing the current Cubs meltdown? I guess it does not matter...since it happens EVERY YEAR.

When "things turn sour" (I guess that means them not winning.....status quo in Cubland) it wont matter. They won it all.

It would be wise for Cub fans to ignore the South side for the forseeable future. They actually have a shot of becoming the baseball team in this town (if they arent already). I would have thought that an impossibility a few years ago. Its now a probability. Complaining about anything down there is going to be rightfully viewed as jealousy and sour grapes. Save your venom for the Cubs front office. They deserve it.

I think that your scale is a little skewed. A little calibration may be in order.

Berating his children, torching his car, and kicking his dog would be appalling and disgusting.

Homophobic tirades littered with expletives by a "professional" baseball manager is, indeed, inappropriate.

I was going for a little hyperbole there, sorry. You're certainly correct with your statements.

I'm not a Cubs fan.

That said, I doubt very much if Cubs fans are "jealous" that your manager is an illiterate goon. It's much easier to be a good winner than a good loser. Unfortunately, White Sox fans have failed at both.

Since your response here seems personal I have to say that your pattern of telling others how they can feel about the Sox, Guillen, or anything short of the Cubs is really irritating. Your "they won it all" statement doesn't excuse the team or its manager from being professional. Please stop trying to be the mouth piece of Cubs fans by advising us where our focus should be.

I can't wait for the sox to return to their norm. First 75 win season and Ozzie has a fit costing himself his job and any shred of respect he has left at that point. I said it when he was hired, eventually the organization will deeply regret the fact that they put this idiot in a position of power. He's a complete tool and doesn't deserve the love that the sox fans heap upon him.

1000 posts for a team you are not a fan of? Point?

A lot of Cub fans around here would use "illiterate goon" to describe Baker. Not me mind you...but some would. And is "illiterate goon" any worse/better than anything Ozzie said? Not really. Nothing you said or Ozzie said bother me in the least.

Cub fans thin skin is sure showing in this thread. I had no idea we were all so prim and proper about colorful language. I sure hear a lot of it when I go to Wrigley.

Typical Sox fan. It doesn't matter what the Sox do to embarass themselves, Chicago or all of baseball (profanity, racism, cheating). As long as they have a world series win nothing matters, including class or professionalism.

For the record, if my cubs team won the world series and proceeded to desecrate the honor, I'd find a new team that deserves my respect and admiration.

Here's an idea, why don't you heed your own words the next time you feel like calling out Cubs fans (and a Cards fan) about the number of posts they have (on any subject) and the kind of opinions they hold.

I have 1000 posts here because, for the most part, it's good baseball talk here. These folks don't always agree with me (in fact, almost never), but more often than not they get me thinking.

For a change, it's nice to be on the same page as these folks.....

He said he was not a Cubs fan....I noted that he had 1000 posts. Seems unusuaual that a person would invest that amount of time in a team he is not a fan of. He certainly has the right to do it.

Im not "calling" anyone out. If waiting "for things to go sour" on the southside....or berating Guillen because he called someone some names.....makes the current collossal mess of the Cubs situation....easier for you to handle.....then enjoy.

FYI....Im Cubs fan for 40 years. I have no love for the White Sox or their manager. But I do give them credit for winning the World Series.

You act like fans can only have an opinion about one team; which makes no sense. Guillen made the comments following last nights game so they are news worthy and have nothing to do with the status of the Cubs. Also, if you think I'm sitting around being preoccupied by the Sox, you're mistaken. That doesn't mean I can't have a legitimate opinion about them and their manager (and frankly, I don't need someone telling me that I can't talk about it because I'm a fan of another

team)...

It's one thing to say you weren't offended it's another thing to say that those of us that didn't like it shouldn't comment or to presume that all of our responses are rooted in "jealousy."

There is no situation in an exchange of words where resorting to hateful bigoted words is necessary. He was absolutely out of line, and I've lost all respect for him.

You're all absolutely right about the derogatory sexual slurs. I'm not debating that at all. They have no place anywhere.

But you know what? Someone decides to badmouth me in the newspaper, I'm going to use every swear word I can find. It may not be professional in the sports sense, but attacks upon a person don't have to be professional.

Both of them just need to keep their traps shut if nothing productive is going to come out of them.

did I miss something - did Mariotti say something about Guillen? If not, what gives him the obligation to open his mouth to defend an opposing manager? That is simply classless and really his comments are extraordinarily offensive.

Guillen apparently has also made some criticisms of Ozzie and Chad Tracey or something...the Dusty thing was not the only trigger.
