Thats great but what are you gonna do with the pitching staff. It would at least take one of Marshall or Marmol if not both of them to get Crawford. So you probably end up having at least hill and Rusch in the rotation which would be awful.

I don't think that gets it done, and I wouldn't do it unless the contract is split up great for the Cubs.

 

Here's some facts.

 

Hunter is being paid 10.75 million for this year and 12 million for 07 with a 2 million buyout option.

 

Juan Pierre is being paid 5.75 million for this year.

 

Hunter turns 31 this July. This year he has an OBP of .333 and .419 slg compared to career numbers of .321/.456

 

So, to get a declining, unproductive player, you'd have to take on ~ 2.5 million for the rest of this year and either have to pay him 12 million next year or buy him out for an additional 2. I'm assuming you'd want him for more than this year, considering this team likely isn't making the playoffs, so you would have to pay that amount.

 

The Twins could probably get more than a rent-a-player at his lowest value and a pitcher at low value and a B prospect. Not a good deal for either team.

 

I'd rather save that cash, sign a SP in the offseason and watch Felix Pie put up comparable numbers to Torii Hunter at the league minimum.

Like seriously, who cares about money anymore, we have the 5th most in baseball, I dont care how much money it takes to build a world series caliber team... Only if the player is worth it.. Give Soriano or C Lee whatever they want to play for us.. we just need top quality players to get us a championship and thats it.. We can keep hoping for all these young players and prospects...well be waiting till 2023...The time is now

Give Soriano or C Lee whatever they want to play for us.. we just need top quality players to get us a championship and thats it.. Still, even with his hit in slugging, his .749 OPS would be an improvement in center field over slappy's .587, nevermind the improvement in defense.

 

If the cost was just Slappy and, say, Rich Hill, I bite, but only if we get a window to negotiate a 2007 contract first. I don't want anymore rentals.

Just because he's an improvement over the garbage that is out there now does not mean it makes sense to trade for, and then resign the guy. He's not very good, but he's paid like a very good player and will get a big contract.

Perhaps I just have little faith in this franchise to give us an improvement over Hunter and am willing to take the guy who isn't all that good over what we'll probably wind up with instead.
