For those of you hoping Dusty wouldn't want to return after this year...

In reference to the wireless phones in the dugout...

“I think it’s much needed,” Baker said. “I’m hoping that next year we can use it on the road because it seems that on the road is where things appear not to work.”

If he's worried about next year, I'd say he plans on staying....

(I know there's a thread on the wireless, but that's not really what I was concerned with here)

I will seriously lose it if Baker is here next year. It's bad enough we are stuck with Rusch and Neifi for this year.

And next year. Why not make it a perefect trifecta and extend the great Dusty Baker?

That little 3 game winning streak would ahve been the ideal time to announce Baker's extension and it didn't happen. That gives me a glimmer of hope

This is exactly why they didn't announce it. They're waiting for you to show the last little bit of hope that you have, so they can announce the extension at the craziest possible moment and crush whatever hope you have left.

I'm feeling a bit negative today if you hadn't noticed.

The only way Baker isn't here next year is if he declines to come back. My guess is his extension will be announced either the same day as Prior's return or Lee's return. Hendry won't fire Baker because then he becomes public enemy #1 and he will be the one held accountable. But when you draw 3 million there's going to be little pressure from MacPhail or FitzSimmons.

Save yourselves a stroke and always assume the worst with the Cubs.

I'm positive double switch Baker is coming back. With Hendry and Baker I can just relax and laugh at this team and put no emotion into it because I'm sick of banging my head against the wall.

I hope Dusty is using them while he's in a booth somewhere,

Could you imagine Joe Morgan and Dusty in the booth together. I mean, isn't Dusty the sort of player-loved, vanilla, baseball lifer that ESPN loves?

Joe Morgan actually gave himself credit today for thinking that Ortiz was "taking off" after a terrific 2002 in Minnesota, saying they were terribly stupid for releasing him. Then he said that he thought somebody would be a good leader for this team, and "I was right."

"Dude, you're a baseball genius."

I'd actually watch and listen to games they do. Maybe the Comedy Channel can do some games sometime and they'll fit right in because I can't take either of them too seriously.

I'm thinking the Lee injury has saved Dusty's job. Even if (when) they fall into last place, the Lee injury is the excuse de jour (also adding in Prior and Wood).

The thing is, this team would be terrible with or with out Lee, so it shouldn't matter. Don't tell that to the national media though. Any time somebody talks about the Cubs' struggles this year, they point no further then the injury to Lee.

Now Hendry is in a interesting/difficult position (which he caused). He can't very well sign Dusty to a one-year extension to see what he can do with a "healthy" team. On the other hand, how can he justify signing Dusty to a multi-year extension with the way this team has played?

IMO, he can't justify extending him at all, but he probably will. In fact, I don't see how he can justify not firing him now, but it's not happening.

I am curious as to how in the H-E-Double Hockey Sticks, Hendry/Cubs Management could justify giving Dusty an extension

Bad breaks. Injuries. Bad hops. Not hitting while runners are in scoring postion. The excuses have already been set in motion.
