A BP article a few days back mentioned that Moore might be considered the Cubs' best first base prospect, as his defense at third is, I think they said, "still questionable."

Now, I'm not gonna ask about ranking him over Dopirak, Sing, Hoffpauir, ect...

But is it fair to say that Moore won't stay at third? That would be a much stronger condemnation of his defence than I'd heard before.

He's already made 9 errors this year and his defense at the hot corner isn't very stellar. It had been improving a little bit, but I think he'll end up like Kelton with a move to the OF in his future if his arm is good enough.

The possibility definitely exists. His error rate is comparable to last year, which is not much of an improvement. Apparently, at his absolute ceiling, his defense will only grade out as about average. I think the Cubs will give him as much time as possible to grow and learn at 3B, especially considering how incredibly shallow it is in the system. However, the outlook is not favorable to Moore staying at 3B.

I think his ceiling defensively at 3B is below average. If he doesn't reach his ceiling, he'll remain bad. So I think if he stays at 3rd, he'll end up somewhere between bad and below average. But I think average is beyond reach.

Sometimes a guy can improve his footwork and his throwing accuracy, and sometimes with better footwork hands that don't look very good now can improve towards average. But if your range is below average, hard to expect that to ever improve.

craig, do you know if Moore is naturally LH or RH and if this might be the cause of some of his problems? I'm pretty sure he bats strictly LH so this leads me to believe that he is naturally LH, but throwing RH.

I bat LH and throw RH and it's never affected me in the infield. You could say I'm naturally LH. I was always above average defensively at SS. I guess I don't understand your reasoning.

My train of thought is that if someone is LH, they would have an easier time throwing with their left hand instead of their right hand. When I played baseball I played 3B for a few years, and could never throw RH worth a crap so I just played LH. It was awkward but I had a decent arm and still got the job done.
